A half hour ago we had 64 serious cases. In the US. And supposedly 10,640 cases(I would bet 50x that).

I was not referring to the media or to whatever your version of the "government" may be ... but to the duly elected congressional delegations and the duly elected executive branch. You really have no other prerogative than to "trust" in their analysis and decisions. You do have the freedom to be skeptical and to demand answers to your questions, but relief to such demand may require patience. As a pragmatist, I have to ask, "To what positive end does your disbelief / skepticism serve?"

First off I'm sitting here at home with my family. Trying to be cautious and not spread the virus for the most part. But at the same time I'm just trying to take in all the data I can and digest it in my feeble brain. The numbers don't seem to match the global reaction at this point. If we look at the hardest hit countries of Italy and China they have a few hundred deaths a day from Corona. Italy averages 1700 deaths per day and China averages 27,000 deaths per day. Normal days. A few hundred more from anything doesn't seem too far outside of the normal. Especially during Flu Season.

I'm trying to figure out why the world is going all in on this particular disease. We did not close one large event for the H1N1 Pandemic and it killed over 500,000 people worldwide. It just doesn't make sense to me. I'm not trying to cause a big fuss and have everyone run out and mingle. But I do think it is worth a little discussion. Also, I like people to think for themselves and not just listen to people that may or may not have an agenda.

I think that is the core of the problem. We bring a sick patient to a hospital full of high risk people and of course this exponentially compounds the problem. Not to mention many hospitals are already a shit show and over burdened. Lord knows the medical industry is propped up on sticks when you peel back the curtains. Without a solution to that, it seems like a self fulfilling prophecy for the elderly sick.

My wife was working the ICU her last rotation of med school, she had a patient come in with ARDs from Influenza... essentially face down on the bed with a ton of tubes coming out of them.

Not a good situation for the patient, and ate up medical resources.

In normal times with a few of these patients here and there + all the normal stuff things are pretty stressful in the ICU, from speaking with her if you had 10 of these patients come in at once at a major hospital would be a shit show (Covid-19 seems to be sending some people into ARDs). Not to mention trying to figure out how to deal with Covid patients that have tons of other comorbidities.

I have a number of friends who are MDs, they all agree this is serious. I've known all of them since I was in elementary/middle school, I can't speak for all the politicians out there, but I can say none of the medical professionals I'm close with have any agenda other than trying to keep people alive.

Yes, there is much to consider and discuss, but the data and considerations seem to be in flux. Many providing updates perceive this as just beginning to ramp up. Conclusions of any sort seem premature, not matter how informed you may be.
Aside from the escalating scenario and questions posed regarding the relativity to other pandemics, what stands out to me is the significantly increased global mobility of peoples (and their illnesses) and the mind boggling number of airline flights now as compared to over a decade ago during the H1N1 Pandemic.

Interesting 'review' of arrival procedures @ Beijing airport right now - I have spent a lot of time in China (including during the H1N1 outbreak in 2009 where I experienced many of the controls the link details) and it is - as the author states "a strong culture of obedience" that will most likely never be analagous to the US - but it is an interesting contrast to US arrivals facilities right now:

That’s really difficult to interpret, given the variables on the equation. Rates are leveled off because life stopped. We all know that’s unsustainable.

I have logged in/off a couple times trying to decide if it's worth being part of this conversation - after already stating I was only "once" returning.
I just heard the FDA administrator say he is pleased with America's response to this.
In Bozeman America - I just brought groceries to my old mom and her older husband who are "isolating". They rent out their basement apt. to a contractor. He daily comes and goes - off to work , mingling, etc and passes through their garage.
The dump trucks, arborists, deck builders, etc were all out in force this morning in "we-are-OK-so far-so-we-need-to-work" Bozeman.
Do folks need to have their shrubs trimmed? Does my neighbor need to have some work done on his deck?
I've been buying/selling fly rods on ebay - supplemental income. Do I need to be packaging/handling/visiting the USPS, doing this activity right now? I quit and wish ebay would shut down.
I, this week talked to somebody in my life, asking them why they were at the gym working out. He replied, "I ain't gonna' let this bullshit keep me in the house".
I will refrain from commenting on what I have seen "on the news" regarding how well we as a society are responding to this - I'll leave that up to the Govt Spokespersons.......
Yes many people where I live are are "hunkering down".
But many, many are not. Wonder what it will take.

Are others out there in Mid America - which is largely ignored by those expounding on how schooled they are about how America's response - seeing what they believe is an effective response by their community(s)?

In respite some of the question posed, the article on Japan was really interesting. Maybe we can keep life going if we act as if everyone around us is sick and contagious? Maybe our society is just really that gross at hygiene?

Three unknowables will play a big role in how history writes this story - Is there a "bounce" of infections after locations remove/lessen "social distancing measures"? Does surviving the infection result in long term immunity? Is there a one or two year trailing fall/winter spike like with Spanish flu?

Really interesting stuff. Spain and US both surpassed 100 cases roughly the same time (March 2nd). Spain has many more cases compared to US due to increased testing, but still a much higher fatal rate (4.6% vs 1.5%). Supports my theory that population density, case demographics, and hospital capacity are partially driving the the disparities.

We need to dramatically beef up production of hospital supplies so urban hospital systems don't crash. Hopefully that's already happening. Social distancing is only going to work temporarily until people give up and have to earn a living. Maybe it will give us enough time to develop enough testing to place quarantines in a targeted manner and treat the influx of sick individuals.

Good Lord man, this has been discussed. You keep pushing the same points and narrative. To say it hasn't been discussed is absurd. I can't imagine that the experts in these fields are sitting around and going, 'You know what, we forgot to factor in that people die from other reasons every year/day! Maybe all of these virus deaths are just part of the 1,700/27,000 that would have died anyway? Man, how did we miss that??"

If I had to guess, the experts are aware of other/non-virus deaths in the country and are taking that into account.

One major takeaway from all of this is it’s very difficult to maintain a high level of preparation for disaster. This is due to several reasons:

1. It’s expensive
2. The urgency diminishes over time, causing people to question the urgency and is it worth the cost.
3. Personal agendas (ie agency bloat) infiltrate and add to #1.
4. Eventually the focus and mission is lost, exacerbating all of the above

Then, disaster strikes and we have to relearn some hard lessons.

I see the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as several other orgs provides research grants to Pirbright.

And Pirbright has a patent on IBV a coronavirus that infect poultry. Not Covid-19

But I don't see where the BMG Foundation owns the patent....looks like a pretty big leap. If they do somehow own the patent, wouldn't all the other partners of Pirbright own it too?

Thoughts on this, my kids have used Azithromycin for years in regards to ear infections and what not. I know I saw something on this that @JLS posted earlier. Could this really be the cure or treatment? Interested to hear more thoughts on things like this vs. numbers of death rates for different countries....... Hopefully some positivity comes from this and maybe just maybe old Donny is onto something?


Or maybe I just have wishful thinking...........
