Best place to live (for the Psychotic big game hunter)

JB, the water fowl might be 'good' but its near impossible for the average guy to get to go. From all the MD guys I've talked to, most were very surpised at how many ducks/geese I shot every year compared to what they did. Course the bag limits were consierably more, it was free for me, and I had about 20 diffrent places to go with in about an hour of my house. 5 within 15 min and usually had it all to myslef. IMO Maryland doesn't hold a candle to the opportunity of what I had in MT when it comes to water fowl.

BHR, sure there's sheep in BC, but how easy are they to get too and how much $$$ does it cost? Alaska is the same way...

Bambi, I'll bet a plane charter into good Dall country every year wouldn't cost as much as your elk trip to CO every year.

Hard to argue Greenhorn's point, though. Guess it just depends on the species you want to hunt.

BS, even for the average guy there are plenty of available places to hunt....just open the book you get with your hunting license and look for public land that allows waterfowl hunting..most within a 1.5 hour drive....plenty of places to hunt and you probably would have it all to yourself because most people assume the same as you. do you need me to hold your hand for ya ? :D

I'd have to say MT or WY. The only game missing in those states would be Coues and Desert Sheep. Other than that, they pretty much have it all.

Greenhorn, I hear what you are saying, but I still think BC has the edge over Montana if time and money weren't an issue. Just like you can hunt several states for bear or mule deer, you can zip south of the border from BC and hunt antelope and those big elk you love so much. However from Montana you aren't aren't able to hunt 4 species of deer (mule deer, whitetail, Columbian blacktail, and sitka blacktail), 5 species of sheep (Californian Bighorn, Rocky Mountain Bighorn, Dall Sheep, Stone Sheep, and just for kicks and giggles I'll include Fannin Sheep) on a fairly regular basis. Then there are grizzlies both coastal and inland, mt. goats, caribou, wolves, and some of the biggest black bears in the world. The get to chase some seriously big mountain lions, lynx, and bobcat as well. I believe they have more than one species of moose in BC as well. Plus they do have elk, maybe not what you are used to, but they have them. Now granted Montana has a few of the animals I listed but things like sheep, goat, and moose are long shot odds of drawing, and grizz aren't going to happen. In BC a guy can a hunt a lot of those animals every year. I think it's about the only place that really edges out Montana in and apples to apples comparison. Alaska is cool, but it's so spread out and one has to fly to get variety there (read spend tons of money). In BC or Montana most those critters are available via a horse or your hinds legs and within a day's drive. Those two factors put them above Alaska in my mind.

greenhorn fits, I like whitetail hunting Sika, and good goose hunting and as I said there is no place like home LOL, tell me where can you shoot unlimited deer out your way from Sept 15th to Jan 31st or 5 geese a day starting 1st of Sept till bow season starts. The only draw back we have is no hunting on Sunday. I can always take a trip for elk , bear or moose or what ever.

JB I have hunted every one of these places and then some. There are new un hunted areas opened up in the county this year. I know the areas from earlier days doing landscape paintings and the deer are thick as skeeters.

I did love my hunt in the bad lands of SD this year. Lots of Turkeys and Mulies, abundance of Elk, prong horn and unland game. I will be heading back next year.

I'd go MT as well, but if I had my druthers I'd live somewhere in the west central part of the state away from the yuppies of the city yet still w/in 3 or 4 hours from being in ID, WY and even Sask if a guy went north of the border for anything. There are several towns with ample public land for elk, deer, bear and antelope w/in 10 minutes of town. The SW corner of the state is nice...but perhaps a bit further from walleye fishing than I'd like.

Like Stewie said, I'll take the waterfowling of MT over your eastern shore birds all day long, not to mention we are 4 geese & 7 ducks in the Pacific flyway from Oct. through mid January. MT deer may not be unlimited, but you can get as many tags as you care to shoot when you start looking at cull units, special hunts, damage hunts, etc.

I would think the problem with AK is the expense of flying everyplace to go to where the game is. MT all you need is car

I can hunt awesome stuff after working a full day.. big elk, big deer, big bears, big antelope, etc.. every year..

BC has the edge on variety, but I don't think so on availability of cheap and easy good stuff (what's good in my opinion I guess) given the close distance to Idaho and Wyoming.. where I live.

Maryland.. come on.. surely you jest.

Greenie and Spitz are smokin' crack. (Or at least taking photos of crack with their cell phones.)

Ain't no good huntin' in SW Montana. Chit, I just arranged to travel to IA, KS, and MO in December, just so I can shoot a deer. ;)

Wovles ate the last few elk that the griz hadn't found. Sheep are all dying from pnuemonia, goats have been shot out, and moose have disappeared. Not even any black bear on the meat pole yet this year.

All the antelope and pheasant country is leased. Mule deer suck to the point where a 18" forkie is a shooter. I think I shot the last whitetail last winter.

No critters left in nearby ID or NW WY. Can't even get an airline ticket to Alaska for under $3,000, making that impractical.

Don't believe a word those guys are saying. It sucks here.

In spite of all I wrote, I'm not movin'.

I agree with the MT supporters...due in large part to the ease of access and price. Though I've seen some great pics from folks in BC, I have yet to see on person put as much high quality critters on the ground as some on here from MT or WY. BC does have the edge in big variety, but due in large part the remoteness of much of that area I'm not sure how practical it is for a person to hunt much of it every year.

Craig, Alaska. All a feller's got to do is ride around in a boat and you can shoot some killer sitka's and some bears with a nice even rub...

Sorry Stick, things are getting a little slow.

Since I was 12 years old I've hunted MT every year. I've hunted WY the past 7 and I think WY is better hunting and more opportunity when considering all species. In a lifetime you will hunt sheep and moose in Wyoming...may not in Montana.

I'm absolutely floored how easy it is to kill elk in Wyomings general areas compared to most of Montana. Its a joke...one day elk hunts are pretty common. The average elk hunter in WY is pretty piss poor compared to MT elk hunters. Lots of lazy hunters in Wyoming...which makes it nice if you're not lazy.

I think for public lands elk, mule deer, and antelope WY is better than MT.

Plus, where I live I'm not that far from Colorado for deer. My spots in Montana are only a 10 hour drive away.

MT and WY are both really good...glad I dont have to make a decision and just hunt both every year.

Just like you DSMF's (technical term coined by the "Great One") to think that the hunting that y'all have is anything like what me and Stick have up in Craig, Alaska.

I think I read that big stick gets 6 months off ... gosh what a guy could do with that kind of time in AK. I only get 3 weeks off - and it all doesn't go to hunting. I think big stick spends too much time reloading and fisting.
