Dad, I want to go turkey hunting really bad!

??? WTF it's bear season. What's wrong with you? Are you my son?

Best part of the day was me attempting to clean these nasty things in my garage. Clueless. I skinned them instead of plucking them. Any great recipes for a couple giant skinned turkeys?

He blasted two from the same group. I chased a couple afterwards but found that a turkey can outrun me. I didn't get one. Both are about twice the size of any I've shot, which was about 15 years ago. I weighed one, while cleaning them and it was 22lbs - without guts.

His real daddy must be from the south.

Next thing you know, he'll be wanting to shoot dog-sized whitetails over a corn flinger.

Kids get crazy ideas from reading hunting magazines and such. He'll come around eventually.

Damn nice toms though, even if they aren't bears.

Congrats on the Birds! I chased around all day and the wind was so brutal that I called it a day at about 2. Looks like it's gonna do the same tomorrow so I'm going fishing!

That is awesome right there. But, you skinned them? Not to worry as bacon is a wonderful replacement. I'd breast them out cut into even strips, wrap in bacon and bake. For the legs I'd separate the thighs from drumsticks and put them into an oven safe pot or better yet a deep baking dish and toss in some fat (bacon) onions, herbs, garlic and maybe a can of PBR and bake at 250 for 6 hours +. You'll get limited meat but a damn good base for some soup.

Now I'm hungry....time to go shoot one myself.

Looks like an excellent morning spent with the boy. He looks like he maybe scarred for life. Both birds have really nice spurs. My turkey hunting buddies and I gauge the trophy more on the spur length than the beard. I love spring turkey hunting, but I'm not so excited about cleaning and eating them. I usually slit the skin along the breast line and fillet the two breast pieces off of the bird leaving everything else attached, for easy stink free disposal. The breast fillets get put in the crock pot with some bacon and cream of chicken soup. IMO, the only thing that maybe more unpleasant to clean is a bear.

I plucked and baked whole only one time (three young-of-the-year fall birds) only once, and ever after its been breasting-out for the pan or grill and thigh/leg combo cooked in crockpots.

Fooling a whole flock into gunning distance is such a rush. Way to go boys!

Wrap the breasts in bacon, cook, then eat the bacon.

Or,

Wrap them in bear meat, roll in rice and seaweed and eat raw.

Awesome job to your son GH. That is sweet.

I usually skin my birds and cook the meat in a crockpot in chicken stock. Then I either make a stew or dice and mix with pork sausage in chili. The other day my wife made a pot pie and it was freaking amazing, good way to do a skinned bird.

Good job. That didn't take too long. Did you check that area out we spoke about?
If I feel lazy (usually am) I breast it out and cut the thigh meat off and bag it up to freeze. The breast meat is great to use as stir fry meat. I also take the meat and cut it up real small and cook it up in place of burger for tacos, just use the same seasoning and a little vegetable oil. My family likes turkey taco meat more than elk burger.
Regardless, I bet your mistake of taking him turkey hunting has cut into your bear hunting time for years to come, and that is not a bad thing.

Great looking birds! Must have been awesome getting a double with the son! I posted a recipe for turkey enchiladas in the recipe forum that I used for my bird last year and this year. I would recommend checking it out! Now you need to work on putting two bears down on the same day!
