Yeah, the NRA wants to spend hundreds of millions putting a cop in every school but overwhelmingly supports the Republicans who whines because they think government spending is the problem......

I like the NRA approach to design changes that add security at schools and other facilities to more closely control entry and exits. The proposal for Congress to mandate and fund armed security guards is unrealistic and a waste of good opportunity for constructive rhetoric. I think armed security should be a local school district and state prerogative where there is adequate funding and where the people (taxpayers and stakeholders) deem it necessary ... not a federal mandate. And where would that funding come from???
NRA lost a great opportunity to be proactive regarding gun control. Instead of completely rejecting anything regarding "AR" type rifles and high capacity magazines, LaPierre should have offered some ideas about better methods of accountability, safety, and other related options. My prediction is that the ban will be re-instituted after VP Biden's committee gets done with its "dirty work". I submit that a proactive, responsible approach by the NRA would better protect 2nd Amendment rights. Seemingly drawing a line in the sand will only more deeply entrench the anti-gun groups.
Although I feel NRA is the best voice for protecting gun rights, Wayne LaPierre's "leadership?" is the reason I quit. HIs approach to every issue is to take a howitzer and blast it. In my opinion, it is way overdue for a more articulate and rational voice to represent the NRA. But that's just the teeny opinion of a has-been, currently non-contributing member. So feel free to disregard.

Straight Arrow---There are plenty of laws on the books if they were enforced and that's basically the stance the NRA takes. He is only doing as told by the large Board that is elected by the 4 million members on a yearly rotating basis. I believe he and Hutchison also said that what they are presenting/proposing is free of charge to any that want to take advantage of all the experts the NRA has at it's diposal. It will also be up to each individual school district to decide what's best for them as far as arming someone in their buildings. Without an armed guard in these latest shootings there would have been nothing to stop what happened. Lanza shot his way through locked doors to get into that school last week. An armed security guard could probably have taken care of him and prevented it before he gained entry. Just locking doors isn't going to mean squat to somebody like that who is bent on creating havoc! Yet, some on here don't even believe the doors should be locked!.

Topgun, I agree there are plenty of laws that really just require enforcement to prevent many gun related problems. If that is an NRA talking point, it would have been a good one for LaPierre to expand on. But he did not. He called on Congress to put an armed guard in every school, which would be a federal mandate ... funded or unfunded.
My contention is that NRA could address existing laws and recommend ways to enforce them and to get a better handle on the problem of rapidly firing AR type rifles and the large capacity magazines. That would go along way in appeasing those who just want to outright ban them.
Improvement in identifying and treating mental illness, improved security at schools and other facilities, and more good guys with guns to thwart bad guys with guns are viable proposals as a reaction to the recent tragedies. However, the specific gun control issue now on the front burner has to do with AR type rifles and large capacity magazines. I'm just saying NRA should have come up with ideas for better controls and means of appeasing some of the legitimate concerns of the anti-gun crowd. Instead, the real issue was skirted and an opportunity for positive national attention has been lost in the recent NRA rhetoric.

Yeah, because no kid ever goes out on the playground at recess.
Lets just put kids in prisons and not allow them out in the exercise yard without an armed escort/guard.
You really think kids in the USA need to have an armed escort instead of banning assault rifles and high capacity magazines?

JC---I could give a chit if they banned what you're talking about because I don't have any and don't see any friggin need for a clip holding more than 8 or 10 rounds in anything but maybe a 22. However, if the truth would come out, it appears from the video that there is some kind of coverup going on to get this ban started again. The video clearly shows a cop taking that AR out of the trunk of the kid's car and unloading it in the presence of other cops. The news report is that 2 to 4 handguns with numerous clips were found in the school with Lanza's body. However, the coroner gave his news briefing and says they were all killed with the friggin assault rifle that was initially reported as being found in the trunk and video appears to back that up! If one semi-automatic weapon is banned, they will then proceed to go for others and that includes any of the common hunting rifles that take a clip and you can take that to the bank. That is what the NRA fears and why they take the stance they do. Take a look at the countless weapons that would be banned in the Bill that Feinstein wants to submit when Congress reconvenes in January. It sure as chit isn't just ARs and their big clips!!! Sure it can happen out on the playground, but an easier way to take out a bunch of kids there would be at highspeed in a friggin car or truck. Do you plan to ban vehicles while you're at it? I think in the next week or two you'll see the NRA engage in a little more meaningful discussion on things that can be done, but because of what I just mentioned I don't think they will waver much on fighting a ban that won't do Jack Chit to stop this kind of stuff!

To me - each side is scared...and many Americans. Level headed people is what we need more of in America. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I'm really tired of hearing and watching people looking for the boogie man in our fellow Americans and we need to let true professionals do their work.
