New Truck MSRP discounts right now??

My cousin is a Toyota salesman. He says he has less than 5 years before car salesman are gone. Making pretty good money wasting people's time in the mean time though...
Toyota was one of the easiest to deal with in my experience
Tesla was by far the best. So easy and you don't have to go to the dealership until your vehicle is ready for pickup.

Don't you drive a Toyota? mtmuley
I don't. But what do Toyotas have to do with me boycotting car companies run by a proud Nazi?

If you're referring to Japanese being one of the Axis powers, Japan's emperor completely abdicated to the US, and we essentially controlled the rebuilding of their nation, including forging a pretty close alliance since the 50's. If someone got up on stage and praised the attack on Pear Harbor I would boycott their company too.

Two months ago, I found a 2022 F-250 XLT on the internet that had all the options I wanted. I used a 2013 F-250 XLT for trade. The deal was done primarily on texting. Did the final negotiations in person. They matched my credit union rate. Drove it home that afternoon. One thing I was looking for was low mileage on the rig, this one had 25K. That's super low miles for the majority of used rigs on the market today. I had been looking for a good 6 months so you do need patience but it's worth it if you have time. I had my 2013 for 9 years. It had 33K on it when I bought it and had 155K on it when I traded it.

I just bought a 2500 GMC AT4 a month ago. Flew to ID and drove it home, saved ~9% off MSRP. I felt like it was a good deal. Local dealers here were not moving off MSRP for same truck.

I shopped for a almost a year before I pulled the trigger. There are good deals to be had now, but you have to be willing to wheel and deal, and travel a bit. Lots of places will deliver. Lots of places advertise a low price then put on a bunch of crap you don't want to get the price back up.

I had fun haggling, and learned a lot.

Key take aways...
  1. Dealers are all over the place when it comes to listed MSRP and markdowns, they raise/lower the price weekly. they want to make money as much as you want to save it, but they also have to move them off the lot.
  2. SOme models are in more demand than others and mark-downs are not as easy to comeby.
  3. Be patient and wait for what you want, it will show up sooner or later.
  4. those 2025 models are getting stale, and I'll bet they'll strike up a deal.
  5. Laura Chevrolet and Dave Smith has some the best deals you can find, and they will ship all over the country, $1500-2000 +/- or fly out and drive it home for less. They have no haggle pricing, and will give you a solid deal right off... you can negotiate it down even more.
  6. figure out the exact price of the model you want with options so you can compare base plus/minus options to get a fair price comparison.
  7. on a 2025, if you can't get 10%+ off I'd walk if they won't come down that far.
  8. Get multiple quotes, don't offer up that you'll finance, or have a trade. Get them to quote you out the door price, no add ons, nothing else. Once you get that put in your trade and negotiate on financing (get financing before you go in from your local bank, make them beat it)
  9. Don't buy an extended warranty from the dealer unless its from GM, and make sure you shop around. Dealers make money off the warranties. Lots of horror stories about third-party warranties. You can get an extended GM warranty through a couple different dealers on line, get a quote before you go in, and make the dealer match or beat it. Knapp offers extended GM warranties for a reasonable price, but it has to be purchased before the bumper to bumper expires. I'm going to run mine out for a couple years then add one one.

The internet has leveled the cost field, more or less. The dealers that won't budge on price don't need to sell the truck, but most know what others are selling theirs for and you can pit them against each other.

Good luck!

If you are referring to Laura Chevrolet in Missouri then they have really good deals. There is also a Laura GMC in collinsville illinois that has really good prices. I bought a small gmc suv from Laura back in 2017, I lived about 15 minutes away at the time. I have a handful of buddies that buy their trucks from them. Buying experience was fine.

My brother got his there as well.

I despise the entire vehicle buying process. Would rather sit in the dentist chair. My last vehicle purchase was just shy of 2 years ago at DS. Traded in a 2016 ram 1500 with 93k in great shape. They would only give low book. The vehicle I was buying was listed for top dollar. They wouldn't budge a dime when I tried to negotiate. Said the truck I was buying was a unicorn, three people lined up to buy it if I backed away, etc. I wanted the truck, so I bought it. Still hated the process.

I've been fortunate to have dealt with some pretty good salesman that even threw in extra accessories for free when we bought my wife's tahoe but I absolutely hate the process also. Not looking forward to that again in the next few years.

A couple years prior to buying my truck, my wife and I were just browsing no real intent to buy. She found a vehicle thst was priced in the upper range but not being that interested, we left. They called us a few days later with a lower price. My wife asked if that was their lowest price they'd go. Salesman said, yep, unbelievable price and no lower. We said no thanks. They called back a few days later with a lower price. She flat out called him a liar. Said, wait, I thought the last price was the lowest and I don't like liars. 😂. Anyways, they came back again and we got a good price. As mentioned above, patience and willingness to walk away is a big deal.

Most of them seem to be all about how many they sell. The most recent one that was probably the nicest, laid back one we had ever dealt with gave us an extra whole set of floor mats, took us out to lunch when we went to pick up the vehicle after they put on the dealer installed options and also asked use what we wanted as a payment. He had also sold my father in law a vehicle and he was referred to us for good reason. There was also a few recalls and issues that we had to go back to the dealership for and he said after the 3rd issue he was going to get us the equivalent of what we bought and the same color if need be. He was all about the customer and would straight up tell us the other salesman hated him and they were trying to get rid of him. He isn't at that dealership anymore which is a bummer because I was wanting to go back to get a truck for me when the time was right. Honestly the best car salesman I've ever had the chance to deal with.

That part about making the most and us saving the most comes into play, as does knowing the market and what is selling fast or not. Some of the model/trims I looked at for nearly all dealers had very little markdowns because they knew they could list them for retail. Other models had deep discounts all across the board, because they didn't sell as well. It was wild some the prices I got, Denali fully loaded for 8-12k off before haggling... They didn't sell as well as the AT4s, and GM kept pumping them out. The sad thing is, that the difference in mechanics and creature comforts between lower models and top trims is very minimal. They're still making money off them even at 10% off or more.

I got two separate quotes from DS about 4 months apart (May, and Sept) the first was ~6% off MSRP, the second was nearly 10%, but the truck didn't have exactly what I wanted. I ended up going to a different dealer and got exactly what I wanted for a few hundred more, which was reasonable considering the option was a few hundred more.

I watched a few dealers inventory and kept track of what was selling over about 6-7 months. Some colors and trims sold way faster than others and the markdowns showed it. One of our local dealers here has 6 2500 Denalis that have been sitting on their lots since February/March. They mark them down occasionally, 7-10%, then back up. I think its a game they play to bring in customers. All are really nice trucks, loaded, could be had for a decent price, but all are black, which doesn't seem to sell nearly as well. I'll bet they'd take 12-15% off to get rid of them at this point.

@Cornbread You can get Chat GPT to run numbers for you and deep dive into analytics and sales. Have it run a search weakly and then keep track of the results. Its a PITA to force it to do what you want, but eventually you can get the right prompts. I only focused on GMC, but i'm sure other brands have similar search functions on their websites. You can search nationwide on GMC website for all new inventory, then filter by price/distance/options, etc. Its not a complete list of inventory, but I found it pretty comprehensive. I think dealers can op in to have it listed on GMs site or not. You do have to go to the dealer website to look up the actual price and what their deals and markdowns actually are. Many dealers around the Great Lakes had big discounts listed, but they were for GM employee pricing only... Once you find the one you want, call them and ask for the out the door price including all fees and add ons and negotiate from there. Watch car sale webstites like carguru, or cars.com as well, they will list low prices, but again check the dealer website to find the exact vehicle and price..

You can quickly see what a good price is for a vehicle by what they are listing them for at the bottom end of pricing. All dealers pay a similar price, more or less.

Many I talked to offered to deliver and pick up my trade, until they figured out I was in Alaska. Delivery was $4-5k or more haha. I flew down and drove home for $900. Took me 4 days, but I wish I'd have spent another 3 and saw more of the Canadian Rockies!

Don't give away ANY information, stick to the price of the truck you want, don't talk about your trade, your financing, what you for work, not anything but out the door price. They will look for a way to get an in. Focus on price and price alone, and get it in writing, not verba, but a purchase agreement. Tell them you're shopping around, so give you their best offer. Don't give them any leverage. Then take that agreement to the next dealer and say I got a quote for this, can you beat it.

I'm window shopping at the moment also. I'm looking at a Silverado either in the 5.3 or 3L Diesel. But, i'm holding off because I ain't paying close to 90k for a 45k truck

Does that include taxes? Assuming diesel? That seems really high to me. I had quotes on base model Denali and AT4s for for mid/high 70s.

I would definitely shop around if that's the local price on an SLE. Laura has duramax SLEs for upper 60s and gassers under 60. They deliver too! A GM warranty is honored at all GM dealers, its not specific to where you buy one.

The boarder patrol guy at the Alaska entry gate said they get 10-12 new cars being driven into AK daily. Thats wild to me, considering we only have 650k, population, and only 2/3 of those would be on the road system. You'd think local dealers would be willing to wheel and deal, but maybe its a volume/time thing vs getting top dollar for one vs selling 3 for less.

I was sold on a gasser until I found he deal I did on a diesel. The new gas and 10spd is a legit combo.
