2025 Wyoming Pronghorn Hunt

Well, I have been waffling back and forth on getting him shoulder mounted or just doing a European mount on him and I’m actually just getting around to getting my 2018 and 2019 bucks finally done, so had the horn sheath from my biggest one from 2018 handy and compared it to this one and it sure seems like this one is bigger. Back then I measured the 2018 buck at 78 3/4”.

Some of that is because the one from 2018 has undoubtedly shrunk not being bondo’d back on the base but this one has a higher prong and maybe a tiny better mass low and better mass on top and looks a little longer. I’ve regretted not getting a shoulder mount of my 2018 buck so I decided to go ahead and get this one mounted. With the split prong and that little horn type growth on his nose I think he is unique enough to get him mounted.

One of these days I’m going to shoot a really big pronghorn but these don’t take up a ton of space like an elk does so I’m going to go ahead and get him mounted. I did a very quick job of measuring him, maybe I need to do it again once he is caped and actually do a good job on it.

Definitely shoulder mount him. He's to gorgeous not to. What did you come up thru on score?
I just measured one horn and doubled it and had him at 77". Spent about 60 seconds on it. I don't think I'm going to stretch him to 80" but I think I left about 1/2" short on the length just kind of starting down at where the horn and hair meet. You get a little extra there where the horn is a bit lower at the front usually. I might not have done a great job going up and around the top of the horn either.

Looking back at the measurements on my 2018 buck I had him at 4" on the 3rd mass measurement and this one only at 3.5" and it sure looks like this one has better mass on that measurement for sure so either I messed up measuring the 2018 buck or this one.

I am curious enough looking at the comparison picture to want to spend some time doing a good measurement on him.

Since score seems to be a determining factor for mounting him or not, have a SCI measurer do an official score. SCI is basically gross B&C and doesn't require a drying period. Also, it helps to watch someone who has experience scoring for the next time you tackle that yourself.

Congrats on your buck!

Thanks.

Score is not THE determining factor as I was waffling even when I thought he was only 77", and obviously I was thinking about it even before I measured anything since I caped him, but it does factor into the decision making process for me.

The split prong really is a neat characteristic, although that would show on the European mount also. The little horn stuff growing on his nose is pretty neat and the only way to really keep that feature is a shoulder mount. I just have limited places to put shoulder mounts and even a pronghorn takes up some room so trying not to shoulder mount every animal I end up shooting.

I do think this is one of those bucks that just looks better than he scores but have already put the deposit down on the shoulder mount regardless of what the final score ends up being.

Awful dry out there I hear. Some lopes have moved to places where there is water. I should feel excited to go, but I'm not. The issues I am having with my lower back area have not improved, but seem to have gotten worse. Fooked around for a whole year with nothing to show for it.

He looks good in the pics. Be interesting to see what he ends up going when you tape him good.

Not mine, but a friend says it raw scores 87.

Nicely done on a unique Antelope. The split prong is really cool. What makes it a shoulder mount for me is the big dark nose....and sideburns.

There are very few states and species where you can go "shopping" and not shoot the first mature critter you see. I think that is what is so attractive about pronghorn. Although after 8 hours on dirt and gravel roads, you start to think there is nothing but 65 inch bucks....Then see a 75 incher and he looks like a monster!

Glad your hunt was drama free after paying the Tire Tax. On my dad's hunt we got the bumper hung in a deep washout So I stand by my earlier assertion that you have to make an "offering".

Thanks for the "tire flu". Had a nail in my tire on the highway on the way to my dad's CA mule deer hunt this weekend, Tire was too damaged to use as a spare after...Then this morning had a nail in my work car. I've had enough of this kind of adventure!
