So we established in our earlier thread that many of us go out afield with our buddies who haven't killed after we have tagged out.

This brings up the question...Do you pack a weapon?

Have any of you encountered a situation where you used the weapon, or were glad you had it. (i.e. coyote, or bear encounter)?

What about finishing off a wounded animal the tag holding individual wounded?

What is the legality of this procedure in your home state/primary hunting season?

Should give us some interesting conversation...:W:

Nope... I just go with a light pack and help. Sometimes it's just glassing or scouting another area.... I leave the bow in camp. Ed F

When I tag out, I will typically carry my rife with me when go afield with the guys from hunting camp. Two reasons, 1) I typically have another license that is good for the same area (i.e., black bear, deer, wolf, elk), and 2) If hunting in Grizzly Bear country, I feel better carrying a rifle to defend myself. (This way FWP can identify the bear that put me in incredible pain, right before it killed me). I also enjoy an opportunity for a coyote.

I would never use my gun to finish off someone else's animal. For starters it illegal in Montana.

I always carry a handgun (if legal) wherever Im hunting. You never know what you may run into out there. . .around here its not so much the bears and dangerous game, but, the possibility of meth heads out in the middle of nowhere cooking their crap.

Good question 2rocky. I know I have ran into a few 'hunting parties (one gun and a contingent of tag alongs)' that I wasn't excited about seeing after hiking solo for miles. I recall reading an article about Arizona public ground where a tag might have a posse of helpers. My hunt bud went out with me on private after he had tagged but he carried no weapon...nor would I were the roles reversed.

I would as long as something else was in season and available, however I generally hold off on the trigger if I think it will mess something up. But, if there's nothing for me to hunt, I'll just go along to help. Heck, this year in ID on the sheep hunt, I didn't have a firearm with me on most days as I was there to glass and pack.

I also wouldn't finish off another's animal. Just party hunting under the weak guise of "help" IMO...

Finishing off someone elses animal in CO would constitute "party hunting" if you had a like license, or "hunting without a license" if you didn't, or had already filled your license. It is also illegal to hunt small game, furbearers, etc, with a caliber larger than .23 during a regular big game season.

Just re-thought what I posted. I guess that if you all have valid licenses, you can all shoot at the same animal. If you finished it off, though, you would be obligated to tag it.

I dont carry a rifle unless I have a reason...and when I'm out of tags, its GREAT to not be carrying a rifle while helping others.

In Montana though, its not illegal to hunt grouse with a .338...

I don't usually carry after I have tagged out. It is kind of nice hiking the hills without the extra weight.

By weapon, do you specifically mean rifle or any weapon? I always have a handgun on me, tag or no tag.

Have any of you encountered a situation where you used the weapon, or were glad you had it. (i.e. coyote, or bear encounter)?
Not yet, thankfully. If I thought I might see coyote on a regular basis, I might still carry a rifle along with my small game license.

What about finishing off a wounded animal the tag holding individual wounded?
Thankfully never been in that position, but if I was it would be up to my hunting partner to take care of that.

See Oaks post.

I feel that the .338 is a bit harsh for grouse, .30-06 for snowshoes and grouse here in Michigan is about right...
and I agree, why carry a rifle when you don't have to.

Here in NH the law simply states that " After you fill your deer tag you may not assist another" Kinda left up to wardens ( or judges ) to interpret. Really sucked this year after I tagged out I couldn't accompany or help my teenage sons. Since coyotes have no closed season I could have said I was hunting them took scattergun and headed in different direction

I have never been in that situation. There's always something to hunt in Montana. If I'm out of elk, and deer tags, then there's wolf, lion, coyote.

If I dont have a tag, or any reason to worry about protecting myself I see no reason to take a gun with. If I am going to be glassing with someone, shooting at yotes is just screwing up his hunt.

I always carry a gun. But like others have said in MT . I always have some kind of tag. Predators mostly. Have had to give my gun to a partner cause he was out of bullets:)

I usually always pack my rifle, even when assisting my buds. Mine is better set up if ranges stretch. And usually I still have a tag of some sort. If not, I still carry a side arm. mtmuley

I leave the weapon behind after I fill my tag. Although, I was wishing I would have brought it last fall while out in Wyoming.....saw two coyotes while tagging along with a friend who was trying to fill his deer tag.
