The only alternative to adding Montana I could see happening is this: the Mountain West adds Baylor and Iowa State in addition to Kansas and K-State and then proceeds to drop Wyoming and Air Force (or Colorado State... one of the two) which are in turn added into the WAC. While this probably isn't the dream situation for Wyoming and Air Force, I think in the end it would be beneficial to them. With Boise State vacating the WAC, there is going to be quite to the power vacuum. Wyoming and Air Force are both decent teams too. Instead of fighting it out for last place each year, they could be top dogs in the WAC and even knock on the BCS door if one could run the table on a good year (something they'd never do in the MWC). They would certain receive smaller cuts from the conference (significantly so if the MWC gains AQ status) but I think in the end it makes for more competitive sports and is just good for everyone. It's likely a pipe dream and will never happen, but it's nice to dream.
I wanted BSU to go to the Pac 16. They have shown what they are made of by winning some big bowl games. I think being in the Pac 16 would really help with their recruitng as well. I think a lot of these schools are scared of BSU. They tried to get Nebraska to play them at Nebraska and the corn said thanks but no thanks.
!!
1 Pointer: I was looking at how the PAC-## would help the Academics and Athletics for BSU. As of now Colorado has no woman's softball so this is a must to be in the conference This will increase the odds for the local high school girls to get a scholarship in their home state. Now as for BSU I don't know if they have woman's softball, but this also would help with the in state girls to stay close to home with a scholarship.

Yes, BSU has women's softball.
You can't field D-1, Pac-10 teams with "local high school girls". If you want to be a team of locals, you have to drop way down to D-III, D-2, NAIA type of stuff.
I have coached lots of High School basketball, and the best players in this state (All-State, Player of the Year) struggle to get off the bench in WAC basketball. The elite schools are recruiting world-wide for many sports (basketball, track & Field, etc), and certainly nationwide for elite programs.
