    sheep pack help

Take sunscreen and bug spray. Those are 2 things you don't often need on an elk hunt. Wet wipes also. You will be sitting out in the sun and wind for 12+ hours a day. Its easy to get really fried. If there are any high mtn lakes around mosquitoes can get bad as well.

    First Time OYO Elk

Be very careful on a drop camp. Find out if the outfitter takes drop camp hunters at the same time he takes guided hunters. If so don't go. Now way he is going to put you in a camp with good elk numbers when he could take his guided hunters in there. How would it look if you killed a nice...

    Dropped Project Alaska

I know the Losers Limp well, and have seen the phantom injury raise its ugly head many times. When the hunt gets tough or the weather bad, some guys would just rather go home. Heck I even tried to pull the Losers Limp myself one time. I was about 25 and decided that instead of setting up...

    Dropped Project Alaska

I've seen the bum knee plenty of times on tough hunts. 90% of the time a Bum knee = losers limp. I think they are scared and tired. I can't believe they ever got picked to do the show to begin with. There is no way the producer or camera men are going to let them get seriously hurt or even...

    Dropped Project Alaska

I too am pretty disappointed in the guys toughness. I get the idea that they are scared to leave camp. Too afraid to get lost. Go read some stories by Walt Prothero. He used to get dropped off and cover huge expanses of territory ALONE for 6 weeks. He woud start out hunting sheep then drop...

    Beast mode

I have trained (over trained) hard for the past 16 years that I have been sitting in an office. Ultra marathons including Wester States 100, triathlons, mtn bike and road bike races etc, all in the name of getting in shape to hunt. My Buddy who lives in north Arkansas, spends his free time...

    Top 20 Elk Hunting Topics

I like Buzz's idea of hunting for a cow your first time out. Killing a cow is very doable, and killing any elk in the mountains is a heck of an education compared to shooting a deer at home. Everything from meat and trophy care, to packing, and eating great meat all year long make killing a cow...

    Top 20 Elk Hunting Topics

6 speed, we may just be looking at it from different viewpoints. My experience comes from 10 years full time guiding on the middle fork in Idaho from 89- 98. I wrote my tips based on what I saw with guys who come from the east once or twice in a lifetime to hunt elk. Many a trip has been...

    Top 20 Elk Hunting Topics

    1. Wear black underwear and throw it away when you get out of the woods. 2. Buy an Elk/Western hunting rifle and learn to shoot it. (no .270 pump with tasco straight 4). Guys who live out west and get to go every year can get by with a small caliber, you may only get to go once and only get...

Heart Rate Monitor - A step backward?

I have been running Ultra's and ironmans and long bike races for many many years. I now train with a garmin as well. Don't get too concerned about the big jumps in HR especially in the early stages of a run. I am 47 and my max HR is 180 and rsting is 48. I have had the Garmin for 2 years...

    Alaska moose - OYOA style

I think stressing that this is a "Once in a Lifetime" hunt on the show is the way to sell it. Sure its going to cost $5,000 or $6,000. The cost is part of the experience. Not only in $ but in time away from work and family. That adds to the adventure. Most anyone can save up for 5 or 10...

    T/C Omega

I killed the biggest buck of my life with a TC Omega in 2003 in Kansas. However with all the new break open style guns out now I switched. The Omega shoots great but is hard to prime with gloves on. Particularly getting under the scope and priming it with a 209 is tough. That the only thing...

Now that is funny. T bone is still the man. And Kowlaski thats a heck of a nice bull. I hope to do that well.

    Elk Bullet

Thanks for all the info. I got some of the barnes in 290 grain. I ordered some BH209 but for now will go with the 777 I have used in the past. I'll shoot them this weekend and report back. T-bone, I'm excited but trying to remain low key. Its a DIY hunt...just trying to keep expectations...

    Elk Bullet

T/C Triumph, 50 cal. never heard of no excuses bullets. I'll look them up. If they will take down a moose I feel good about them for elk. The barnes look good also.

    Elk Bullet

I like what I'm hearing about the 209 powder. I think I'll give it a try. What do you think about Bullets for Elk. I have always been partial to Powerbelts for elk but have heard from several sources they are not ideal for elk. What do you suggest? This Utah tag is a one time deal for me...

So I want to go on a goat hunt....

Me and a buddy went with Mike Hammett on a goat moose combo several years ago in BC. We both got our moose (both over 50") and goats both over (91/2) and had the best trip ever. I still bet you can go for both under 10,000 and like you said, you can plan it, and know when you are going to go...

What do you consider "In Shape"?

I run marathons, triathlons, ultramarathons, and bike races. Its a sickness just like hunting. When you sit at a desk 9 hours a day you have to do something. The only problem is that its alot of fun and very addicting and before you know it you end up spending hunting money on a new bike or...
