Would you help?

Would you help a person out in a unit they were unfamiliar with?

  • I would help as much as I could. Some day I might need help, too.

I'm #2....

But it totally depends on the person.... not just any random stranger via the www. If a person is a decent person and will take the time to correspond on a more personal level...via email ... PM's...ask smart questions.. put the work into research on their own.....etc..etc.. I will help!! No GPS coordinates to my honey holes or anything but good info...

I'm #2 also. I have got a lot of good help from the people on this board. I have also helped out a lot. General tags are tougher to give out info for but I will give some. LE tags I'll give all I know as long as it's my info to give. My pet peeve is another hunter giving out info you have worked hard for to the next joe who asks.

That being said I hope to one day help out those that have helped me out. You can also bet if I have the time I'll be right there showing instead of marking a red X on the map.

Thanks guys who have helped me out. You know who you are. I know it is tough to give out info but I do appreciate it and I will return the favor.

#2. Hard to get tags are completely different than OTC or general tags. But if I have a predisposed dislike for a guy I'm not going to go out of my way to help him. Keep in mind this applies to the internet.

I've helped alot of guys out locally, maybe not to my favorite spots, but with information that will definitely increase their opportunity at an animal.

It is crazy up here in Alaska. You have to practically inherit hunting spots from family. Its like a birthright or something. Good luck finding people who are willing to help you up here. I remember an earlier post from someone talking about their float trip. When I asked where they were going, they said they weren't allowed to say (per their guide). I wasn't looking for GPS coordinates, just a general location (out of curiosity). Something general, like the Yukon River. I remember a guy that I used to work with. He got a moose every year. Some of them were monsters too. He definately had a honey hole. I certainly would not expect him to divulge exact info. But I asked him where he hunted and he wouldn't tell me ANYTHING. Again, not looking for GPS plots or anything, just general info, like, Tanana Flats, White Mountains, down by Delta, something like that. Almost everyone is like that up here. I hadn't hunted in Alaska when I moved up here, and until last year, I went out by myself because no one was willing to let me tag along or give me any info at all. Luckily, a friend at work invited me along last year, and we have been going hunting together for several species this year. You have to practically fall into things like that up here. That is why I said that I would help most people out, at least with general information.

I don't have too much info to give but I am always more than willing to share when people ask about hunts I have done. I've gottem some good info as well so I think most decent people help out a fellow hunter

On tough draw hunts, I would help most folks out. I have helped out folks on the internet through PM's, but not those that post for the very first time and saying I drew a great tag, where should I go.

I am also more likely to share info with a person that lives in a state I applying for.:D

Last year a guy from MT drew a bighorn tag for an area I am familiar with. He didn't get around well and was only able to go when a family member was able to tag along. He ended up taking a 194" sheep, just him and his brother I think. Makes me laugh when I see the Supertag sheep winner, and three guides, standing over a smaller sheep taken in the same area.

I am also thankful for infomation that has been shared with me, some of these folks have already posted in this thread. Thanks guys and you know who you are. Randy, I still owe you plenty for getting me turned on goats (that didn't sound good did it).:D

I've been very lucky with the limited draws over the years and don't mind helping a fellow hunter out that draws a limited tag........or even ones that forget when application deadlines are for limited draws.

How could somebody forget when the application deadlines are? They don't deserve to draw if they don't care more than that...

I will 100% on a OIL tag since I could not go again anyway as long as It was a spot I found myself. I would also on other tags if it was a spot I was not going to hunt myself the same year, AND if it was a spot I found myself. I will never freely give info that someone else gave me because I have been burned in the past myself from loose lipped dipshits. This goes for fishing spots as well, not just hunting.
I took a guy ice fishing from my Archery team this winter. A little 20 acre lake that you have to walk a 1/2 mile to get into. We slammed some big gills and the very next week his urge to play guide overwhelmed him and he literally took 6 guys from Archery night there. I had to ask him "WTF"??? some guys are just stupid.

Definately have and would help where I can....but tend to draw the line at places that I share with other buddies already (as far as specifics) as I don't think it fair to impose my "generosity" on others. I also don't hunt the honey holes (few as they are) where friends have taken me in...when they "invite" so be it but I'm not going to move in on another friends hard earned spot. JMHO

I guess I am never going to pull a Limited Tag, Heck most of the guys I hunt with have never or will never see an Elk. If one of them asks I will point them in the right direction, but being in Louisiana any info I give is a year old! I tell them to hunt certain places, but most just take of and walk and talk about seeing something going over a ridge that looked like an elk. Age has a Good factor about it when it comes to hunting the NF, you just sit there and let those who walk push them to you! John

I'm with a number of guys here

I don't mind giving what limited info I may have on how to hunt certain animals

I don't mind giving info out to those who ask on where animals may hang, but will usually give a general (many square miles) wave of the hand when pointing these animals out (it’s up to the individual to know well enough how to find and hunt these animals on their own)

I like giving people a hand getting their animals out, but won't go back into these areas with out an invite, and will never take or tell any one where these places are

Most have worked very hard to find these spots and most people have ten friends who have ten friends that want to do it the easy way

I also don’t divulge places to my favorite sporting goods shop owner, it isn’t long before those small out of the way places are run full of man tracks

I've seen a number of people around here even that have told a few of their little "secret spots", only to find with in a couple years, the place over run with idiots who don't know how to hunt

Some end up finding out they'll have do it all on their own.. putting in years of work, assloads of time on maps, thousands of dollars on gas money, several pairs of boots, sore legs, back, feet, and sacraficed time with work, family, etc..... and if by chance they find a place that's GREAT they might learn how to hunt it - and kick some ass there.

Not until you do that yourself, then trust somebody with what could be just a brief conversation resulting in people hunting right where you want to be.. will you understand why they choose to stay tight-lipped.

I believe in teamwork, not freeloading. People are really different about what they look for and what they like from one hunt to another and unless the two know each other, its hard to communicate very well, except for some basic facts. That kind of limits help, even if well intentioned help.

I've heard horror stories where a guy gets help for a good general tag or easy tag area and then brings all his friends and relatives there and pretty much shoots it out. That's a bad thing, a bad person to help.

If a person has a controlled hunt tag in hand, i'll be glad to help.

In the past I've been too generous with local general season advice. I've taken a new guy hunting with me and he in turn told all co-workers, relatives, and anyone he ran into of the exact location. I later let him know that is considered a crappy thing to do and he felt bad, but the damage was already done.

I have a person from another site coming to my county next fall on my suggestion. I will show him the places he will be hunting and give him some hints on a few good spots(plus lay of the land) to hunt for a large whitetail. It will be his job to pick the tree. Not a draw tag(over the counter) but all I am able to do. Now that they made the early season muzzleloader open(no draw) I do not have the heart to tell him how busy it will be now but he will have the private land next to the public and the deer do get driven right to him.

I'll help out if and when I can, but as others have said it has to be information that I've earned not been given. I've been pretty fortunate to be able to tag along with many here to some of their hunt areas, but those are never shared with others...

Good poll.Wish I had some good info to share or hide that would affect most of you out west but I don't.I have received some general info from people on here and do greatly appreciate it.Having little experience hunting out west any info to me is very valuable and guarded.I don't apply for le tags but hope to eventually get a mule deer, bear ,elk and a trophy antelope.
I know it will take time and a lot of research for me to accomplish this while many of you do it every year. Thanks for info given and thanks for hopefully some to come.
I to am very guarded as the list of times I've been burned is way to long already.Nothing more agravating than seeing family or friends and even your sons high school buddies stomping you favorite pheasant land or fishing a once guarded fishing hole that you worked hard to find.
With that said I'd probably still help some (most) people out with what I know.Just has to be the right situation.
Two general things that I've found out over time.1) Most people don't want help with their hunting they want to be taken hunting(fishing).2)It's not who you tell its who that person tells that will probably affect things the most.
