Who will be eating Antelope this fall?

I have read Louis L'Amour books on and off for most of my life. I "think" it's his books that call it the poorest western meat. With over twenty million copies sold, that would make a lot of skeptics. It's interesting how much media has an impact on cultural perceptions. That being said, the antelope I ate as a kid was awful, and we ate it most years. But looking back my mom was taught by her mom to cook everything well done+ they had some generational fears of trichinosis (probably a story there). The animals we shot were often highly stressed. It's how they hunted back then, you would see pickups blitzing back and forth across the dessert like the Baja 1000. We would field dress the animals toss them in the back of a dusty pickup truck and keep filling tags all day. When all the tags were filled after several day it was an 8-hour drive home. If we were lucky, we'd peel the skin and hang them over a creek, but it was very dry country where we hunted. And we never trimmed the gristle or silver skin back then. Thinking back, no wonder it tasted bad. I had the blessing of marrying a woman that does not like "gamey" meat. I learned over the years how to properly cool, butcher, and cook wild game. It has her stamp of approval as not being "gamey." Including antelope. Side note, I still continue to swap gloves every time I touch the fur. Especially on antelope and mule deer. May just be a superstition but I think it helps.

I too agree, Antelope is absolutely fantastic. It’s the first thing that left my freezer. This is just a points year for me and Antelope in Colorado and Wyoming. I can’t imagine a world where I ever accumulate more than a few in either state before I burn them. They are too much fun to hunt and tasty to eat. Goodluck to everyone putting in this year.

I hope to get one in Wyoming this year. Hopefully I can get a tag with 8 points. The last one was in 2017. Taking the wife with me so she can see what it is all about in preparation for her to go in 2026 and hopefully harvest her first big game animal.

I'm hoping this is the year of the antelope being replenished in the freezer. I'm getting pretty low on the goods. My last one was excellent table fare.

I’ll be eating pronghorn tonight. Freezer still has some inventory but getting low on speedgoat. I help a rancher in eastern CO whenever he calls and needs a hand and in exchange he lets my family and me hunt out there. Since they’re B tags, between my wife, dad, and I we typically fair pretty well and stay stocked up.

If you look at my post history, you will see I joined back when I first got an antelope tag as an adult onset hunter.

I was excited about getting an antelope, had heard they are arguably the best tasting American game animal, and gave myself the username AntelopeEater because I was excited at the prospect of getting n eating one.

The tag I got that year was for a super remote area way up in the upper northwestern corner of Nevada where I had never been before. Some people on this forum, including Randy Newburg gave me some advice which I really appreciated.

Unfortunately, I failed to harvest that year, and I got frustrated and changed my username to DoveEater since I at least got some doves and ate them that year.

Now, yesterday, I drew a Nevada antelope tag for horns shorter than ears antelope in an area of mid-Northern Nevada I have hunted deer before, and I saw plenty of antelope in a legal to hunt area there so I am feeling very optimistic I will be posting pictures of an antelope and an antelope steak dinner this September.

Then, I will change my username back to AntelopeEater, lol.
I'm not sure what you mean by an "adult onset hunter" but I also drew a tag for Wyoming antelope this year on my first attempt with no points! (maybe that means I am one). I will be driving the 2100 miles with my son and 2 others from eastern North Carolina. I hope to be an AntelopeEater TOO!

I think those who put in the Montana draw will find out today.

Been 5 years since I last drew a buck tag, but the last time I did I pulled my kids out of school and we stayed in a hotel with a pool and I shot a young buck and it is still one of the best hunting trips I have ever had.

Love those times with the kiddos. Memories made like that last forever.

@DoveEater
I’m ready for you to change that name back cause you got your speed goat! When do you go this year? Where is your tag?

I’ll be eating antelope tomorrow from this NM buck.

Congratulations! That is a nice looking harvest!

I will be trying to get mine one week from tomorrow, north central Nevada. I've driven through the hunting area numerous times before, and always seen antelope along the highway there so I am pretty optimistic.

Can I ask which GMU? I pulled a private land doe tag this fall and am looking for a landowner willing to give me access. I'm happy to mend some fences or shovel some horse stalls!
