Used to live in Wyoming long ago when extra antelope tags, mostly for does, but some for bucks too were so easy to get. Got to hunt a lot of antelope.
Getting closer to dark I would glass a herd. Then the next morning, I would come back a few hours before light with my Big Male Akita Hunting dog. With the wind in our faces, we would take a compass bearing and just keep walking towards where i felt the herd was at dusk the night before.
Somewhere around 200 yards from them, my dog would get excited, started farting too. Then we found a high point and sat behind a tall sagebrush and waited for dawn with my pre-64 Model 70 270, with a simple 4x scope and shooting sticks.
It worked enough to have confidence in the outcome much to most of the time.
Akitas are one of the dog breeds that still are strong with wolf genes and instincts.
We did this too with late season tags in the cold and sometimes early snow.
I always gave him the warm bloody liver.
