Relax, Everything is Going to be Okay!

This might be a bit of a stretch. I’m all for honesty and integrity, but it’s ridiculous to think someone shouldn’t be able to cut their firewood cause of governmental incompetence.
It seems we are complicit in that incompetence. Just all part of the problem. How many people here do
you think have emailed their congressional reps and told them to start negotiating? We are circling the drain…

This has now been the longest government shutdown that I can remember (ever?)- I think a better question might be has anyone actually noticed much of a difference?

I would be interested to hear of Hunt Talker’s observations and experiences during the past few months.
observations:

  • I have seen signs of retail purchases slowing down around government institutions that employ large numbers of workers as you would expect. Most of them are starting to run out of paycheck by now and they would naturally be tightening their belts so to speak.
  • Food pantries are reporting the largest number of clients are showing up in recent history and are looking for funding / donations. This is likely due to a combination of things not just the shutdown; sharp increases in food pricing, uncertainty in the market place reduces investment in employment, and the government shutdown leaving folks without paychecks. I don't think that you could point to just one thing, but I've heard it has been higher than normal this past week especially in areas where their are large numbers of government employees.
  • My wife works for an independently funded non-profit organization that runs a similar program to the federal Meals on Wheels program. They have volunteer delivery services for those in need (mostly elderly) and also offer pre-cooked meals for folks in need with heavily discounted pricing. Not everyone qualifies for the benefit, so they do turn away clients. She has seen a sharp uptick in requests for food assistance this week and last week. Especially this week and it's only Monday. I would expect to see more of this as snap benefits run out next month and the social workers (both who work for private organizations and governmental social workers as their sources dry up), are scrambling to find funding sources to feed people in need.

Well, you really haven't been paying much attention to the news lately.

I guess all federal laws and regulations are now hereby suspended until further notice.

It's not the forest service's incompetence.

Last time I got a USFS firewood permit a couple years ago, it was free.🙂
This is what doesnt make sense to me.

It costs $6 for my BLM permits per cord.

I got some in March. We cut a bit before I had my surgery.

I got another 2 cords in September.

I called the BLM office, they filled out the forms, and mailed me the permits in a big manilla envelope.

Probably $20 in labor and materials for wood permits so I can go cut trees for firewood, which were already bulldozed by the gold mine for their drilling program.
