Correct, I question how they did. I do not question how i haven’t. They already told me they were hunting with some local guys that know the area. I don’t have one of those. Well; I have a Gasner that has said “the elk are within 45 min of his house” but that’s not the same “help” as the kind of help they had.

Now, if you or anyone that actually knew about Billings area elk wanted to go hunt with me and show me there are really elk within 45 min of my house- THAT would be the same as their situation.

Because It’s not like they boots-on-the-ground scout more than me, they don’t read more on the internet about habitat, population and distribution, pressure, agriculture, prior success or anything more than me. I can guarantee it!

It’s not what we know, it’s who we know. I’ve said that since I shot my first elk at 15 and it’ll never change.

You guys put elk up on the pedestal and act like they are some mythical creature. They really aren’t that hard to kill. I’ll give you a tip about our local elk they are very nomadic you can hunt the same spot 6 days and not see a elk and day 7 they are in there spot for about 15-20 min where you can hunt them. It’s time in the field bud

Bullshit. They admitted to having inside info and they haven’t spent more time in the field than me. It holds all the water for me. Last inside info I got I walked in and found elk in the first few hours and we shot a 6 point.

I probably have the best attitude about not filling tags than anyone you know

Lots of pickups with 4wheelers and coolers heading back east on the interstate with archery targets in the back this morning. Lots of Minnesota plates. One even from New York. Would hate that fuel bill

I’d like to thank Exxon in their efforts to help manage our mule deer. At almost 6 dollars a gallon for diesel it could be an interesting hunting season for people. Glad I can fit a couple elk in the Subaru

Whatever. You can’t always read into people’s motivations for doing something. A very good friend of mine went to the Custer last year and had a great hunt. He’s not into YouTube or Instagram. He just appreciates the hunt for what it was. Good numbers of mule deer in a very neat landscape to hunt in.

Edited to ad: I told him the quality wasn’t near what it was 25+ years ago when we lived there. I told him it was a cool corner of the world. I told him he’d be hard-pressed to find the trophy class mule deer. He said “I don’t care”. Pretty sure they drew tags and are going back again this year.

I think thats a lot of it for NR. I'm not planning that hunt hells canyon area or a future Missouri River breaks hunt for antlers. Those among a couple others will be for the landscape. Don't get me wrong i apply for plenty of hunts where trophy quality is the biggest motivator as well.

Drove from Otter Creek to Tongue river this afternoon. Maybe a dozen camps, most of them had big fifth wheels. Bet they spent more on gas than you did.
