Its not, the suppressed rifle is many many many times louder.

Suppressed rifle shots are typically well under 140 dB at shooters ear. Mid 120s to mid 130s is pretty normal.

Ear plugs and muffs have tested/advertised NRR ratings for how much the reduce noise. High 20s, low 30s seems like a pretty typical rating. Just happens to be about the same amount a suppressor reduces noise from a typical hunting rifle.

I’m biased as I am a machinist for a company that makes suppressors so I have them on all my guns. While there are some heavy cans out there you can get titanium suppressors in the 5-12ounce range. Depending on length and design. There are companies now starting to design longer suppressors that half the can basically sleeves over the barrel so a 7” suppressor might only add 3-4” of barrel length.

And sure if you have classic rifles that you don’t want to thread I understand and I have a lot of sentimental guns I won’t thread or alter. But I pretty much hunt with rifles I’m not afraid to beat up a little bit and I thread them all to accept suppressors. Also recoil reduction is a real benefit. A suppressor traps and slows expanding gases which does cause recoil reduction as long as the volume of the suppressor doesn’t get overwhelmed. Larger case capacity needs more suppressor volume to trap gases (i.e. bigger suppressor) and suppressors with recoil brakes that attach to the end of the suppressor further decrease recoil. If you go to any precision shooting matches I’d wager probably 90% of people are shooting suppressed.

Also an unsuppressed center fire rifles decibel rating is roughly 140-160 at the ear depending on caliber. With a muzzle brake it can be 165-175+ at your ear. With most quality suppressors it will usually be ~120-135 at the ear. So a foam ear plug typically will block out 15-33db IF installed in the ear correctly. So I choose to shoot a suppressor because I can get recoil mitigation and sound suppression to a point I don’t need to wear ear protection during a hunt. At the range I always wear plugs and muffs and with that setup I could literally shoot all day and not worry about hearing issues but to each there own.

Also it’s plain silly to not have a suppressed .22 with you to shoot grouse during September elk season haha

I just bought a Canik Void to live on my 7.62x39 Ruger Ranch. I’ll get another one soon. It’s getting sent from silencer shop to an FFL that will do a 4473 transfer. Should be fun! I’ll get another one that’s nicer soon.

I did the Silencer Central deal from OnX back in August (was like 40% off). Got a banish backcountry for around 600. Anyway, went through normal process, got my tax stamp pretty quickly but the rest of their process takes a while. Mine should be in my mailbox today. I'm so glad that whole thing is seemingly going away and we will be able to just buy one in a local gun shop soon, I need a 22 suppressor.
