In 1960, my first and still favorite president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, signed into law the “Multiple Use Sustained Yield Act”. This mandated that our National Forests be managed to “best meet the needs of the American People”.

His Quote;

“As we peer into society's future, we — you and I, and our government — must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Farewell address (1961)

Writing this, he directly states that America’s public land, is a fundamental cornerstone of our country’s freedom, our identity, and an example of our success as a nation.

I live where there is abundant National Forest Land and dedicated wilderness. I have attended two presentations over the past six months offered by superbly qualified biologists that work for private agencies/land trusts and are able to speak freely about what is coming to our public lands all over the west.

The most fitting term, is “Be-heading”, plundering the headwaters of our rivers and wilderness areas, as fast and fully as possible, throwing away every environmental protection while “our public lands are mined, logged, drilled, overgrazed all to ruin and cut up with endless roads.

Some time ago there was very serious political talk about selling our public lands. Without question, the expressed outrage by hunters stopped that.

The new game plan of the plunderers for our public land is just to allow cheap long-term leases without any reviews or damage control.

There is not a day going when I do not feel sick to my stomach about this.

Driving by the USFS Office here, it looks like Ghost Town after layoffs. In other district, i went to, there are no Head-quarters left. Just a big green empty building and chained-off parking lot with a “For Sale” sign on it.

Our US Forest Service is being “Be-headed" too and there is nothing of value to replace it with offering a hint of protection to "Our Public Lands"

What Teddy R. feared most is happening in spades.
