Most residential recycling is a joke (for the reasons stated above) -- a "feel good" salve for those who want to feel like they are doing something without actually doing something.
Car battery recycling is not a joke IMO.

Would the Detroit/Cuban car, running at 9 mpg since 1956 really have a lower carbon footprint than @geetar's Camary, that presumable has a high mpg rating and emission controls? Kind of like the decision to replace an older freezer with a new one with a much higher energy efficiency. Whis is better for the planet?
Camary versus 1940s vehicle head to head ... no

But it’s about the fact that most Americans have there cars for 7 years ( the average has been climbing recently)

So the comparison is really, what’s better all in, the original carbon impact to build + maintain + fuel a 1940s car from 1940 to today or build +maintain+ fuel 12 Toyota camarys ie buying a new car every 7 years.

Doesn't matter how green a car is we still treat them as a consumable good.

I was referring to the residential curbside bin collection, not intending to address specialty programs such as tires, oil, batteries, computer/electronics parts, etc.

Good article on biomass use, and the debate over using it in California.
