Newest US Senate Land Sale Amendment

Wonder if the next step is an exemption for Idaho?

there's only so much time for games right?

plus, is the exemption changing zinke or daines (assuming daines mind is made up) mind? plus, they had nothing to do with the idea.

Can only hope that all of these calls and emails are finally starting to have an effect.
They are having an effect. I don't think he would have come out against it without overwhelming public pressure. I hope to see more follow suit to avoid being labeled as anti public land and Lee supporters.

There is always time.
Daines answer “I am against the sale of public land, but I like that Montana was excluded” doesn’t exactly sound definitive. He is waiting to see which way the wind blows.

I think a vote on the bill is being held up as they debate with the House. Zinke sounded pretty firm. Great. Need a few more like him. I also think the debate is mostly about SALT.

I think one has to have the twitter to read these, so I will paste them, but Charles Haywood has a thread refuting the damage control claims Lee is making. Not sure how correct he is on all of it, but some of it makes sense. For example, when I search the current text of the bill language, one finds no reference to valuing conservation or recreation in determining what should be sold -despite what Lee claims.

This is great news.

Meanwhile - SRS extended.

That is huge news.

It is one of the things I've been asking for while I've been back there. I'd also like the PILT formulas updated. Both of those are how the Federal government pays and equivalent share of property taxes on lands that would otherwise not be taxed. For too long, Congress has used that as a political football, giving credibility to upset rural County Commissioners and School Boards that Federal land ownership makes their life difficult.

So with Risch sounding like a no is Lee running out of votes?

How is he going to save face in this; pull it entirely or maybe just reduce it to Utah?

I actually got a survey back from Hageman-

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee recently released legislative text to be considered as part of Senate Republicans’ budget reconciliation bill.

Here's WY It Matters.

An Overview:

The federal government owns 645 million acres of the nation’s surface estate. The Senate text proposes to identify and dispose of 2-3 million of those particular acres that are within the jurisdiction of the BLM and USFS in 11 western states to address the national housing shortage. The very text of the bill prohibits the sale of lands with existing rights (such as grazing and mining leases) and those “Federally Protected Lands”, such as National Parks, National Monuments, wilderness areas, or national recreation areas. State, local, and tribal government must be consulted with regard to any land sales, and funds generated from the sales will be shared with the local governments and used to address the deferred maintenance backlog on BLM and USFS lands.

It is important to note that this is a proposal from the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee which is still subject to further consideration, changes, and a vote in the Senate. The House passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act did not include the sale of any public lands, and this new public lands sale provision is not currently proposed for me to vote on in the House as your representative.

WY It Matters:

There is a nationwide shortage of at least 4.5 million houses and a shortage of 7.1 million affordable and available homes. These numbers will continue to grow as our population expands. Wyoming is no stranger to the challenges associated with limited housing and skyrocketing prices, and for many of our communities, private development has reached maximum potential, with federal land ownership constraining growth, jobs, and economic development. The BLM”s policy of continuing to buy private land (such as the purchase SW of Casper), creates land-locked communities and checkerboard patterns, while also restricting development on isolated parcels. The federal government owns nearly 50% of Wyoming’s surface estate. The Senate Committee’s proposal to unlock a mere fraction of 1% of federal lands in small tracts strikes a responsible balance to address local needs while protecting the beautiful landscapes that make up our state’s identity.

Got an email back from Downing today. My first email started with thanking him for being an advocate for public lands in the past, and urging him to continue to do so in the future.

I'm unfamiliar with the HR 718 referenced in the email below, but it seems to be presented as a House measure to counteract Lee's land sale amendment in the BBB.

Dear [R.K.]:

Thank you for contacting me about public lands. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

As a lifelong outdoorsman, I am committed to conserving our public lands and wilderness areas so that generations to come can enjoy them as I have.

The House recently passed H.R. 1, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, to make the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent. I was proud to work with the Montana Delegation to successfully remove provisions authorizing the sale of public land from the bill.

I am a cosponsor of H.R. 718, the Public Lands in Public Hands Act, which prevents the sale or transfer of public lands managed by the Department of the Interior and U.S. Forest Service without Congressional approval. H.R. 718 has been referred to the House Natural Resources Committee and House Agriculture Committee.

I will work with my colleagues to bring this legislation to the House floor for a vote as soon as possible.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me about other issues. I encourage you to sign up for my newsletter and visit my website at https://downing.house.gov for more information.

Respectfully,

My limited understanding is that 718 is to prevent an end run by the executive branch. The BBB with Lee's amendment would grant the Congressional approval.

I listened to Senator Lee yesterday on the radio and try to appease the concerns of his constituents, I respectfully disagree with him on this public land sell off. I hope he listens to his constituents and drops this nonsense. I have sent many emails. Which I rarely do. I hope the phone calls and emails make the support for this dissappear. This site helps finding info on these topics easier as well. Thanks to all you watchdogs out there.

I got the same survey and refused to answer it. My opinion is that it is a Trojan horse. Once you agree that it is wrong to sell the lands she listed but have no rebuttal about different lands then you have given your consent. The canned responses I have gotten from Hageman truly lead me to believe she is a snake in the grass. I believe things like this show that she believes she is smarter than her constituents and would later be able to go back to this and say you agreed it was ok. Given a different option in the next election she will not receive my vote.
