2026 controlled hunts

Fun little fact. Even though it's not listed on the draw hunt if you get drawn for elephant mountain javelina you get a either sex elk tag as well. Now it's not gonna be the same as being fully guided and having the place to yourself but the odds are much better.
A few years ago, my son was drawn for the management mule deer hunt, I was able to go as a spectator, we hunted on top of the mountain, he got a buck, doe and a Markhor, an exotic that wasn't supposed to be on the place. Didn't see any elk that trip. Did see the bighorns though.

Any pics? Being able to get a markhor, that’s too damn cool!!! Congrats!!

That's awesome! I had no idea Texas even had Markhor. I saw an advertisement for a Pakistan Markhor hunt for the low, low price of 165K and a trophy fee of over 100K (don't remember the exact amount).

That's awesome! I've heard of them getting a few auodad but not a markhor. On my javelina hunt out of the 6 of us one guy spotted a bull in his unit but didn't close the deal. I saw enough sign at the water holes to feal confident there's definitely a few elk around.
What in the world is a markhor doing there?

It's Texas never know what you're gonna get. A few years ago a guy shot a wildibeest on the devil's river controlled hunt.

How do you know all this? ha

Facebook posts?

I guess it all doesn't mean much because Texas hunts are so hard to draw. I drew a quail hunt for the first hunt in like 10 years and I apply for about 30 hunts a year. To be honest I don't think many of the hunts are very good hunts to begin with.

Learned all that at the hunt orientations when I drew devils river exotic and javelina at elephant mountain. At devil's river the wildebeest had been killed the year prior so the hunt manager still had pics.

I've been exceptionally lucky on the Texas controlled hunts! Sense 2018 I've drawn 7 hunts of those 7 hunts 4 I'd do again in a heartbeat, 2 I don't regret but not interested in doing again, and 1 was kind of a dud.

Which devil's river hunt the did you do? Del Norte? Any good ones you recommend to put in for? Only cool one I got to do was JD Murpree alligator hunt when I was 15. Black gap javelina was tough. Only 2 people got one. James Daughtry was not fun either for deer. Could have been a bad blind though
