Pa. Game commission announced today that September first will be the end of the 123 year old deputy warden program. They are going to have just full time wardens going forward. There are about 100 deputy warden’s in the state to supplement the full time warden’s
Last Week the state Supreme Court ruled that the open field doctrine is unconstitutional in the state. Wardens could enter private property any time any where without a warrant under the open fields doctrine, until last week. I think this move to eliminate the deputy warden program is a byproduct of the state Supreme Court ruling.

i saw a headline about the wardens but haven't read into the "why" yet, certainly isn't a financial issue and it seems like a hasty decision if it was just on the open field doctrine since that was a recent thing and i would expect a change/elimination of positions would(should) be a longer term thought process.

the open fields I certainly have mixed feelings but in reality i don't think it will lead to more baiting, the guys that are going to practice illegal activity would have continued with or without the open fields doctrine they just won't be as sneaky now and the wardens will have to work a bit harder to prove their cases so i would think more resources not less are needed

My take as a PA resident for half a century is that the PGC was getting pretty much what they were paying for in regards to the deputy warden program. I've had very mixed results over the years in my interactions with deputy wardens, some were great to deal with, some were drawn to positions of power in a Barney Fife kind of way.
The 4th amendment seems pretty clear to me, but I guess higher courts will figure out the open fields issue.

As a past PA resident of 30 years, I 100% don’t agree with the wardens being able to enter private land.

The PA game wardens are some of the snarkiest and cockiest individuals I have ever encountered. Most of them simply get a mental high from putting on the badge.

It’s actually strange how different PA game wardens are from all of the other LEO’s I have came across over the years.

Having said that, PA is the land of the lying poachers so I am sure they get tainted quickly after leaving the academy.
