one week to go before the truck hits the road for this bear hunt. hopefully, will have some pics to post, and some updates. just not going to be as good as Fins. sitting on the bait starting sept 1st. friend has 5 bait sites out, and all are being hit. hoping to see a decent bear up there.:D bows and bears. doesn't get any better.

be getting to minnesota today. drove from southern illinois to near the wisconsin dells yesterday. about 6 hours to go before we hit the deer river area. be picking up the tag and getting ready for tomorrows opener today. see if the wife will take some pics to post later. or maybe wait til we get to the actual hunting. wanted to meet up with a member, but ended up on the wrong side of the state. maybe another time. not nearly as exciting as Fins' adventures, but this is the midwest.:(

TLC This is Fins brother I live in Deer River. Good luck with your hunt. Are you guided? If you need some help or assistance look me up .Jason

When we get up there - we'll send you a PM with my phone number. Maybe we can get together for supper sometime this week and talk about your brother. . . ha ha ha

Fin was going to give me some advice but was afraid of what you might do to him. . . so I'll just get it straight "from the horse's mouth."

here and ready to go. made it to the local walmart for all those last minute things. gloves, off insect repellant, bear tag. so, around noon tomorrow, will be hitting the woods ready to bag a bear. weather sounds perfect for the week. mid 70's for highs, and 40's for the lows. have some pics tomorrow?

not much to report. first day pretty much a bust. except for being hunting that is. no bears sighted. bait had been hit, but with no camera on it, hard to say when. after dark? have to get creative I guess. going to try a honey burn this afternoon and see if I can get anything to come out and play. did hear about 3 bears being taken. 2 that went around 100 pounds, and 1 that ran around 175. also heard about 2 guys seeing 2 sows with cubs. even a midwestener knows that is a bad thing to see.

wife did get some pictures of the local wildlife yesterday. when she gets them on the computer, will get them posted.

one last thing. for anyone who doubts whether or not thermacells work, don't!!! sat yesterday for 7 hours and never had one problem with mosquitos. or any other flying critter for that matter.

well, now for the whole story. already told about the trip up. after realizing we had forgot a few things, we stopped at the gander mountain to pick up a couple things. butt pads and a backpack for the camera equipment.

well, for those that have traveled along rt 2 in minnesota, you know there are not many rest areas(0). sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

tlc...couple of buddies here in NE went up to Ontario about a week ago...got 2 of 3...said it was warm and rained every day. good luck and have a safe hunt...look forward to some pics.

after being blanked the first night, decided to take a good look around and see what I could see. not much of a view from here. but, after deciding on a honey burn, things seemed to have turned for a bit.

well, would love to post the link to the video of the hunt. unfortunately, the wife did not push the record button hard enough. so needless to say, we have no video of this hunt. but, what we do have, are pictures.

wife thought it would be a good idea to get a few pics of me in the stand(too big for here), so she went and stood by the bait pile and burn that was going. she got her pics, and came back up into the stand. less than 10 minutes later after the burn had gone out and she got back in the stand, this pretty lil thing showed up. did the normal walk around the back of the bait site, then tried to uncover it from in between the 2 trees. did not work, so he decided it be best to walk out into the open and move the logs around. well, after reaching one too many times, he is now going to make a first replacement mount for the ones I lost.

weighed in field dressed at 186 lbs. approximate length, 5'5". and very unofficial head score, 17+.

traveled approximately 50 yards as the crow flies. but as anyone who has ever tracked a bear knows, they never go in a straight line. shot was at 19yards. tree stand was 15 foot tall. had a great time doing this hunt. looking forward to the next time I get to come and try minnesota again.
