LO Battle Ahead?

Considering your tag as a resident cost 57 dollars I guess I know which side of the pool those lo tags should come from to benefit the state if they are gonna sell them at nr price. I have 3 bull tags right now for 25 and im sitting on 12 points for elk in Wyoming. You guys are already pushing a 90/10 split and people are starting to bail push this thru and put your boot on the nr throat harder and it will become a revenue issue eventually. As it sits when I draw I’ll probably walk away from Wyoming.
[/tildes.

Please explain my wyoming should cater to you and your 3 bull tags so it would be easier to get a fourth? There is a line out the door for NR elk tags. The state elected officials have listened to its people and chose to priorize resident hunters over non residents. There is an enormous demand to hunt in wyoming. Please don't tell me wyoming has its foor on your throat. You obviously have time and money to burn, but not everything is for sale.

My $57 dollar elk tag goes in the freezer, not on the wall, not on Instagram, not for some kind of excessive ego boost. If you want to shoot 3 bulls a year go do it. I think it's a bit excessive and clearly about horns, but you do what makes you happy within the law.

Since I really only have a vested interest in Wyo at this point, I'll stick to this state. I think Wyo should set aside a certain percentage of total tags for each species. Call them gift tags, whatever you want. From those tags should come all the little set asides that the State hands out. NR tags, Commissioner tags, Governors tags, One-shot, Women's hunt, Wounded Warrior, LO tags, Outfitter tags, etc. How the gift tags are divided up amongst these groups, I would leave that up to the Commision. I know how I would do it but realize others would do it differently. What that percentage of Gift tags should be? I would argue for some species it should be zero. For some the current NR allocation would be an appropriate number. All the gift tags are priced at the same level. The other end of that percentage are Resident tags.

The arguments over which special group is more deserving of tags and how many is getting old. I have heard them all. Outfitters tags are needed since they bring tourist $ to the state. Women's hunt tags are needed since they are under-represented in hunting. Nr tags are needed since the find such a high portion of the G&F budget. One shot tags are needed because how else are former D1 quarterbacks going to be able to hunt antelope with a Governor each year. Comms tags are needed otherwise Conservation Orgs wont be able to keep game populations thriving. NR DIYers need tags so that hunting out of state doesn't become a rich mans game. LO tags are needed because LO's do so much good for wildlife. LO tags need to be transferable so that LO's can keep the ranch. All have a compelling story some are more worthy in my mind.

I have spent a decent amount of my time, money and effort making my thoughts known to the Commission, Task Farce and Legislators. Let the special interest groups make their case and let the Commision decide. Either way as a resident it does not matter to me. I know what our percentage is and how the carve outs are handled is indifferent to me.

In my defense 2 of those bull tags are elk and 1 was a happy little accident. How will you feel about this when they take a tag that would have been yours and sell it to treeshark? You don’t think the outfitters are gonna kick and scream to keep the nr opportunity and still scalp these lo tags? I’m dead set against this

I think we are on the same page. I'm also dead set against transferable land owner tags.

This will take opportunity away from anyone that can’t write a check for the tag. R and nr you watch it’ll get ranches locked up tighter the good guys that still let people hunt will decrease even more because of these more readily available tags. It’ll make it easier for the outfitters to lock leases in knowing they will have a paying customer. Which will push more people into public causing more crowding. All while potentially adding more pressure when the ranch sells 3 tags and keeps one for the client. But yes by all means you guys should take advice from the guys advocating for this that doesn’t even live in a state with elk or has actually purchased one. Seems like with these kind of issues everyone always thinks the other guys is gonna get screwed and doesn’t look at what could happen to themselves. I’m close to drawing my Wyoming tag I’ll get my adventure let you guys have your mess and fight like hell to keep it from spreading north if this what you guys want

I applaud you for your honesty, but holy smokes… That’s a little ridiculous, especially when you’re the one throwing stones at others over greed.
It isnt sheer number of people - its sheer numbers of people adding states and more apps.

I drew my state and Idaho wasn’t sure if a ak trip was gonna happen again or not and after the draw results I found out it was. Wouldn’t have applied for Idaho had I known I was for sure heading to ak again. Hunting isn’t harvesting I may end the season with the freezer lower than it is now.

Wasnt trying to villify you in my previous response. To be clear.

I’ve been applying in Idaho for 10 years this is the first year I’ve seen a tag go figure

I’ve only hunted Idaho once, but the area we hunted was really cool- probably my favorite area just to camp/hike around I’ve ever been to. Some day I will go back, even if it’s just for a fishing trip.

Pretty sure last guy that was selling tags there is still in prison

Some quick math:
Wyoming 2025 elk application cost me $2014.13
$1950 that was held for about 4 months. My high interest savings account pays roughly 1.5% monthly = $1950 * 1.5/12 compounded = $9.77 lost interest.
2025 Elk PP cost = $53.30
Total 2025 out of pocket cost for a roughly 1/20 chance at an elk tag = $127.20.

Lets say this same hunt takes 12 points to draw by the time you do this for 12 years to earn 12 years of points which would mean applying for 13 years.
12 years of applying and failing = $127.20 * 12 = $1526.40.
13th year, $2014.13 app cost and securing the tag.
Total elk tag cost assuming by a miracle none of these prices increase over 13 years = $1526.40 + $2014.13 = $3540.53

That sure is an expensive elk tag for a slightly above average unit. The unit I referenced above in NM has had about a 1/20 chance to draw the tag the last few years. $4k is about the going rate - not the inflated huge money maker that everyone is making these tags out to be.
You and carp going to reimburse me for my elk points if they suddenly become massively devalued so you guys can have your LO tags that will take opportunities from those of us that went for the long term plan?
