And I don't mean our kids picking up some off the street, or at school. I'm more concerned of what this nations so called doctors are prescibing to their patients, as part of the 'Healing' process.

I've been witness to abosolute irresponsible prescribed medication, from licsened doctors, that have worsened the situation far, far beyond all reasonible logic.

Case #1: Yeah, I cracked my noggin wide open, Big Time. 6" slit over the top of my cranium, 16 stitches anf 7 staples. Minor concussion. To me it was a pretty good ouchie, but in all honesty, I was good to go after a day's rest.

ER Doc prescribes a narcotic pain killer......Oxycoton.

I had a low grade head-ache for a couple days and he's giving me a hardcore addictive narcotic?

Case #2: Some of Y'All know about my 7 yr relationship with Miss # (the old timers know, I don't need to discrace an otherwise nice lady). She had an accident 2 yrs before I met her, BAD, BAD, BAD. Guess which narcotic the Dr's hooked her on ? I spent 7 yrs with her, going through the operations, the bi-polar behavior, in & out of re-hab, just to have her beg for money to buy more pain killers from the street & go overseas and have a complete relapse.

Case # 3: I just got a call from a friend completely lost in time, who has said what, what day it is,all from the drugs multiple Dr's have prescribed. Totally lost from reality......

Case #4: My Dad has the onset of Old-Timers. The Dr's had him so F'd up the 1st 2 yrs it was scary. Thank GOD my two nurse sister-in laws barged in. Got him off 75% of the prescribed garbage and he's doing OK. Not Perfect, but at least able to carry on s semi coherent conversation !

It's a shame we have to look out for the Dr's as much as wee do the street...............

My first cousin is a visiting hospice nurse in the Augusta,GA area and has told me of numerous patients who were on their way out and totally unaware of the world about them until they were taken off the drugs and miraculously became coherent and many evolved into their old selves and went home or to a care facility and got an extension on their lives. If you go to a doctor's office very often and witness the cute ladies pulling their little stewardess cases behind them going in or out every time you're there, you may be sure someone in that office is pushing too much medicine.

Most of the prescriptions seem to just mask the symptoms instead of solving the problem.

It's pretty crazy when it's explained as something that isn't even a "problem" but ADHD being just a genetic difference suiting the "hunter/gatherer" rather than an someone in an agriculture based society.

1- Good friend of mine is on the *bench* and sees juveniles. By in large he says and finally people are listening about docs over medicating when a VERY large percentage of kids before him are actually suffering from PTSD.

2-Wife just went through a hip surgery and they gave her a narco. She lasted three days and said enough and sent me down to the cop shop to dump it in the bin and has just been dealing with Tylenol. Sure she is in some pain, but she knows what it is from and knows it will get better day by day.

How about restless leg syndrome medication....run 5 miles and tell me you have restless legs.
One of the major problems I see is people using medication to fix there problems instead of nutrition. If everyone ate healthy, cut out processed junk food, and exercised, the number of people with heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes etc. would severely plummet.

Wow, I had no idea myself and others were creating so many drug addicts and pill poppers when we prescribed pain meds and medication for ADHD. I guess we should all just stop giving out any medication for any of these issues, especially injuries. Because when we give out 20 tabs of Oxycodone for a head injury/laceration/concussion we have sentenced a patient to a life of selling themselves on the street so that they can afford to purchase their pain killers from drug dealers. Oh no, wait a minute, we can't do that because we can be SUED for under treating a patients pain.

I think maybe we should just suggest that instead of doing testing and diagnosing a child with ADHD and prescribing one of the meds for it, that the parents actually should spend some time with the child and be an actual parent instead of trying to be their best friend, wait a minute, we can't do that because we can be SUED for under treating a childs illness that leads to their inability to perform well in school.

I know, I know, we will quit trying to treat elderly patients for their early stage Alzheimers and trying to slow the progression of it with drugs, because they may have side effects that a nurse may not agree with. Because Lord knows, medicine is perfect and all drugs have been tested on ALL people so we know exactly what will happen to each and every single individual person, each and every time they take a prescribed medicine. Oh thats right, wait a minute, if we decide we are concerned that the drugs may adversely affect the Alzheimers patient so we decide not to use them, then we might be SUED by the patients daughter who is a nurse because we undertreated the patient and his disease progressed faster than it should have.

We will quit prescribing medications for blood pressure and diabetes and cardiovascular disease because we really all know that it's all your fault you have these problems anyway. We will tell you to start exercising and lose weight and you will feel better. And when you have your heart attack because you didn't cut out red meat and eggs, or your stroke because you didn't exercise or cut out salt, or your kidney failure because you didn't lose weight and watch your carbohydrate intake you can SUE us for failing to treat your illness because we were more concerned you might have side effects or develop an addiction.

I have no understanding of the whole adhd stuff, etc. What I do understand is the practical use of meds. As a 'former' quadriplegic from an atv accident - if it was not for meds... wow, I don't know what to say.

A good amount of recovery is based on the patient. Each patient is different. After about 2-3 weeks in the hospital - I stopped my pain meds. At the same time I had a med I didn't think was doing jack squat and my goal was to get off as much as possible (as tolerable)... I told them to cut it out against their advise. This point made me realize my limits and understanding of the practical use of meds for rehab/recovery.

There are patterns and strategic means to meds. When utilized with a professional intent it is a valuable tool. I do not know how to really describe it... Like a truck engine. Multiple aspects make that engine run at it's peak ability. Same here.

I dislike meds and know they can be abused. I also know when used as intended, they are extremely effective!

My two pennies of thought on meds.

Pain killers are one thing. Not good, but as sytes said, when you need them they are invaluable.

On the other hand, drugs that mess with brain chemistry are spooky.

I don't like em but like Sytes said, when you need em, you need em. I took em recently for arthroplasty recupe and rehab. Getting behind the pain curvve was tough but I was sure happy when I could do without them.

Yes, unfortunately none of us come with an external label letting medical providers know which one's are predisposed.

Thats the rub sometimes, I would say maybe 1 out of 100 (just an observation, not from a retrospective study) of the pain mad prescriptions end up getting abused, maybe more maybe less. So do we treat everyone like it will be abused and risk not truly treating a patient who is really in need of the med, or do we try and be as careful as possible and know that occasionally someone will be come addicted? Try and fall somewhere in the middle and have someone starting a thread discussing why Doctors are dangerous. Sometimes ya can't win for losing, ya know?

I realize that goldtip and and can appreciate your previous post. For the life of me though, I can't grasp the recreational aspect of hydrocodone and it's equivalents.
