Let's talk about Drugs.

As a pharmacist, the number one thing that I would change that could benefit EVERYONE is to STOP letting big pharma advertise medications or illnesses on TV. I'm sure to Goldtip and every other doctor out there, it gets a little tiring with patients "self-diagnosing" themselves via a drug commercial and asking there doctor to prescribe them that drug.

I realize that goldtip and and can appreciate your previous post. For the life of me though, I can't grasp the recreational aspect of hydrocodone and it's equivalents.

Vicodin puts me straight to sleep.

Maybe it was the 6 pack I wash it down with?;)

You know you would think that wouldn't ya? I know when I first started seeing those med adds on TV I thought, "Oh great, everyone in the world is going to want to know if they can really go surfing in a hay field if they take Allegra." HAHAHA. But it's really the opposite. I dx someone with hypertension or hyperlipidemia or depression and tell them the med I feel would be best for them and I hear, " Oh gosh, "I don't want to take that." When I ask why, the answer is invariably, "Haven't you seen the commercials? It says right on the commercial that medicine X causes anal leakage and rectal prolapse and dry mouth." Oh yeah, "Can I really get a 4 hour erection?" That one always gets asked.

My doctor told me he could prescribe a pill for my condition, but didn't want to until all other avenues were exhausted. I really appreciated his candor.

He thinks I might be crazy...my wife agrees!

I never thought this tread would generate such input. I was in a very frustrated state of 'Me' because I had just had to deal with a third case of a loved/ cared for someone who had gone completely Bonkers and it was obvious, from their behavior, drug induced, all in the past few months.

Dr. Gold: Please know that I was not inditing all Dr's. I'm completely square with the tenious situation all DR's face day to day. It's very similar to the responsiblity of my career as a USMC Officer and having to lead Mommy & Daddy's baby into harms way. Damned if you do, F*cked if you don't. But I promise you this, being sued is a picnic compared to a stint in Levenworth !

It's just a sad situation to see a person lost from who they really are, and very difficult to deal with.

And if we're not allowed to vent frustrations, now and then, the Channel 9 bimbo will be reporting last nights news...........

Are we cool dude?

Gunner46, we are absolutely cool. Was just frustrated to read your post and feel like despite the best efforts I hope all medical providers make to "Do no harm" that once again we are getting hammered for doing what was most likely felt to be the best possible treatment at the time it was prescribed, I hope.

Thank you for your service to our country, and no, I don't ever want to experience Leavenworth!

Waptit: Listen to you Dr and Loved ones.....
Dink: YOU WISH !!
WyOp: Get your congressman to pass a bill to prohibit TV
Styes: When I broke my back and had surgery, they under prescribed the medications. I went through weeks of ...... we won't go there. 2 perc's and a double Scotch, 4X a day. (or maybe it was having my wife, mother, and mother-in law henning my A$$ off). Neither here nor there, recovery was a B*tch !!
Zack: Yeah, we're bored, but it beats our girlfriends catching us on a porn site.

I would have to support Goldtip in his thoughts as many times when making a decision about treatment I have to consider what's best for the patient versus what the legal system thinks is best for the patient. I have found through the last few years that what generation you are from can also play a large role in what you "expect" from the doctor or whether you have a bit of a back bone when it comes to pain. Narcotics do definitely serve a purpose when prescribed properly and when the patient uses them properly. Unfortunately many people in my generation and younger choose not to use them properly, which I don't understand as they put me to sleep. It is amazing the games and lies people will tell you to try to get them and the threats you get when you choose to do the right thing and either not prescribe them or cut them off.

Dink would you trade a 4 hour erection for not being able to ever get one again, lol?

Wow, I had no idea myself and others were creating so many drug addicts and pill poppers when we prescribed pain meds and medication for ADHD. I guess we should all just stop giving out any medication for any of these issues, especially injuries. Because when we give out 20 tabs of Oxycodone for a head injury/laceration/concussion we have sentenced a patient to a life of selling themselves on the street so that they can afford to purchase their pain killers from drug dealers. Oh no, wait a minute, we can't do that because we can be SUED for under treating a patients pain.

I think maybe we should just suggest that instead of doing testing and diagnosing a child with ADHD and prescribing one of the meds for it, that the parents actually should spend some time with the child and be an actual parent instead of trying to be their best friend, wait a minute, we can't do that because we can be SUED for under treating a childs illness that leads to their inability to perform well in school.

I know, I know, we will quit trying to treat elderly patients for their early stage Alzheimers and trying to slow the progression of it with drugs, because they may have side effects that a nurse may not agree with. Because Lord knows, medicine is perfect and all drugs have been tested on ALL people so we know exactly what will happen to each and every single individual person, each and every time they take a prescribed medicine. Oh thats right, wait a minute, if we decide we are concerned that the drugs may adversely affect the Alzheimers patient so we decide not to use them, then we might be SUED by the patients daughter who is a nurse because we undertreated the patient and his disease progressed faster than it should have.

We will quit prescribing medications for blood pressure and diabetes and cardiovascular disease because we really all know that it's all your fault you have these problems anyway. We will tell you to start exercising and lose weight and you will feel better. And when you have your heart attack because you didn't cut out red meat and eggs, or your stroke because you didn't exercise or cut out salt, or your kidney failure because you didn't lose weight and watch your carbohydrate intake you can SUE us for failing to treat your illness because we were more concerned you might have side effects or develop an addiction.

End of rant.

I hope I didnt offend you gold tip, I have nothing against doctors and agree with everything you said. And of course you have a lot of legal obligations to attend to.
Its hard to see half of an elementary class room prescribed ridalin because, like you said, the parents dont spend any time with there kids and be an actual parent.
It has nothing to do with the doctor that person lives an unhealthy life style and is prescribed an assortment of drugs other wise theyll fall over dead of a heart attack.
My point was (and I didnt make it very clear, my bad) is that society thinks if they have a problem that they need a pill to fix it, which is the case some of the time, but a lot of the time it can be fixed through other means.

Thanks for the responses. The more input, on this issue, the more we all might finally grasp what the impact it has on our lives.

I've presented it for discussion and y'all can go on as you please.

My departure statement is this:

I have been in Love with a very, very beautiful woman for 7 yrs. I however have not spent one day, since Aug, with her because I refuse to deal with her addiction any further.

If anyone feels to talk further...a PM would work.

Gunner, the only thing that will help you get the person you love back in your life is her wanting to change. When that happens you put her in a inpatient treatment program for no less than 30d, and then when she gets out, you move states to somewhere she has absolutely no contact with the element she is currently running with and start over fresh. Change her cell number, change your home number, change address. Every time she has contact with those who are her so called friends, or every time she passes a place where she used to get high, she will feel the gnawing inside to relapse. Because believe me, if she feels that gnawing, she will believe with all her soul that it will be different this time, she can control it this time, and the worse part is what she doesn't know, is the odds when she relapses that it will be the LAST time she relapses go through the roof. Good luck.

JonBoy, nope you didn't piss me off at all. Believe me, whenever I get a patient that actually does what I say to do as opposed to just swallowing the pill I prescribed, I try and make them feel like King for the day. It's not that hard to do, because I RARELY have to do it. Maybe, and I mean a big MAYBE, 10% of the patients I see actually join a gym, lose some weight and modify their diet and make lifestyle changes. Many times even for those patients it's simply not enough change to remove them from the medicine, but it sure makes it a lot easier when they do change for them to remain on only 1 medicine. The last study I read shows that the average patient with high blood pressure is on 3.2 medications before their blood pressure is controlled. It would be my educated guess, that MANY of those made absolutely no lifestyle changes at all.

We are a fast food lifestyle for many aspects of our lives, fix me now. Many patients simply want to know "what pill do I have to take to fix whats wrong." Not what they can do to help change it or how they may prevent it becoming another medicine and another medicine. Some people have no choice, they drew the short straw on the gene pool and ended up with a condition that we can treat, but no amount of lifestyle modification will change that they have to take medicine. But remember, we as hunters are a small, small fraction of the general population, we are also some of the healthiest by simply our desires to hunt farther, pack more, and for many of us who are successful at it, eat healthy lean meat.

You have to love the disclaimers.....If you have a liver or kidneys, this may not be for you.

It's all in the pitch isn't it? Not from Dr.s but from companies...

My Mom is 90 and never took an aspirin and neither do I. My son is in prison for drug related crimes and has been an Rx addict for 25 years. He found plenty of doctors that were willing to prescribe Vicodin or Oxy for his "back pain". There are good and bad doctors just like the rest of us. I do think we are way too willing to put kids on Ritalin and other drugs just because they act like little peckerheads.

Ringer- I may be just an old Frat, but back in my young, brain-mush days when you acted like a little peckerhead, there was a sure fire remedy. It was called a Dad's belt, or a teachers swat. Seemed to work pretty good, and the long term effects lasted.
