Keeping Out'a Trouble

Coyote calling/hunting is my passion and I'd rather do it than just about any other hunting. Besides it gives me something to do this time of year and keeps me out of trouble. I thought some of you might enjoy a few pics from my recent forays.

Will start with this big male I called out of creek bottom. Sure a big headed thing.

Next up I just really like the intense light in this photograph. A friend of mine and fellow pro-staffer for Les Johnson's Predator Quest called in this coyote for me a week ago Saturday using a Ruffidawg hand call. Shot her at 225 yards facing me.

Since the world didn't end last Friday I decided to try and end the world for a couple of coyotes instead. Worked out well for me, not so much for the coyotes. These two coyotes make number 19 and 20 of 21 coyotes I've shot with this Ruger Predator Rifle in 22-250. Number 16 got away somehow. To say I'm very impressed with this rifle is an understatement! Hope everyone has a happy holiday season. I can't wait to get out and try for a few more before my Christmas vacation is up.

I've been doing the same thing. Looks like the yote in the 2nd picture might have a little mange.

Nope, no mange, just a bad case of cockle burrs and hounds tongue burrs. Stupid burrs in this country destroy a lot of pelts. Most the time they are so bad and so embedded they can't be combed out.

I'm curious, are you howling more than distress calling now that they are near breeding season?

TBone more distress than howling right now. Coyote vocals don't seem to be working very well right now for some odd reason. Normally I use them more than distress, but they aren't having it.

Good stuff. Any price to them to make it worth all the hassle of skinning, stretching, etc?

Big Fin, if I could shoot some clean dogs not full of burdock and hounds tongue it would be worth the time. Averaged right around $45.00-$50.00 per coyote last year. This year might be a little lower, but not much. Unfortunately my best fur buyer died and it has my buddy's and I scrambling a little to find another one than we can trust.

Schmalts, not to make you feel one way or another but I hear that WI is one of the toughest states to call in a coyote. I have a few friends there and they all swear it's pert near impossible. I'm not sure why, but for some reason y'all have some smart coyotes...the dumb one's must have all migrated to MN.

Part of it is the terrain and cover. Not too many of those wide open places where you can see them coming a long way here. If you set up on a field they will usually skirt the edge in the woods and bust you down wind. More times than I can remember I have got up and started walking to a new spot only to cut the tracks of the one that circled down wind and busted me in the cover. The best places that guys have luck is the urban sprawl spots if you can get permission. They are a little less wiley but you need to use a shotgun and get them pretty close.

You guys that have success there have my respect. I think I'll stick with these wide open spaces.
