I'd like to start by saying thank you to one of my friends here on HuntTalk, Kansasdad, without his insight and recomendations this trip may not have been so enjoyable and I appreciate all of the info he provided to help us get on some birds. In this day and age it's sure a great feeling to know there are people out there like him who are willing to share their knowledge and secret spots with an "outsider". If he is ever in need of a place to kill a big whitetail. . he has a place here in Indiana! Thanks Mark.

We arrived in Kansas on Wed morning and headed to the woods. We saw several birds throughout the day and passed on several jakes, both Rio's and Eastern's. The birds were not real responsive to dekes or calls, so, plan B. . . spot and stalk! We put the sneaks on 3 mature toms and got in front of them, only to have them cut into the woods about 80 yds too soon. Day 2 : Windy. who would have thought? lol. Again we saw several birds and passed on several jakes again (they are pushing their luck) Around 1pm, 5 jakes and 3 tom's stepped out into the field and headed across about 100 yds to my North, still showing no interest in my dekes and not able to hear my calls, all I could do was watch the show. I knew Wes was across from me, so, I sent him a text and told him birds were on the way. . .15 min later . . .boom. Nice Rio down. Not 20 mins go by and out steps a gobbler about 35 yds from me. . .boom Nice Eastern down. We are on a roll! We decide to pack up, dress the birds, get them checked in, grab some lunch, and come back around 5pm. We get back out at around 5pm and get some spots picked out and dig in. Around 630 out steps 2 jakes, I pass. 10 mins later out steps a mature Rio and I'm chomping at the bit. . .he angles his way across the field, I'm thinking its now or never, he is not getting any closer. . so at 55yds (which my gun is very capable at) I flip the safety and boom. . .off he goes. Dust all around him where the pellets were hitting. . .and instantly the roll I was on comes to a screaching halt!! It happens to the best of us I keep telling myself.(wasn't helping). another 40 mins goes by and I hear a gunshot somewhere way behind me, I text Wes, well? Missed at 50yds is his response. . .we are now rolling backwards! Anyway, the next 2 days we passed on several jakes and started seeing more hens, very little gobbling, we were happy to have had the oppurtunity to kill a couple of birds and be able to pass on the jakes this year. With all of the jakes we saw this year, next year should be even better in Kansas.
