Make sure they are licensed and have them show it to you and ask for references. Look up the PI laws in the state where you live before you call one and just ask some the basic questions, ask if they have worked for insurance companies and start from there. Good PI's are not cheap, but there are good at what they do & have lots of conections. I hope this helps.

LOL that is for sure but seriously just do your homework like prev stated make sure they are lic and check references and just ask lots of questions if they are anygood they will have all the answers

Do you know any local cops? If so, most good P.I.'s will have some "loose" connection or at least be known by the local police, maybe ask them for a reference.

Find the nastiest lawyer in town and ask him who to hire. He'll probably have a good one on staff.
If you are looking in Idaho there is no license requirement. Other than that the above ideas are good. If you are looking into civil offenses. If you are looking at criminal the local P.D. would be a better place to start. Either way a good lawyer would be my recommended first step. They may be pricey but could end up saving you in the end.

Seriously though good luck not sure what your goin through but like stated before we are all here todo what we can to help. I have been going through some crap in my personal life fore the last year as well and all of the guys on here are like extended family some are there to give you a shoulder and some are there just to give you a hard time to make you smile.
