Two years ago my son shot his first buck on his own with no help from any of the family. We took it home, fleshed it out and stuck it up in a tree for a year and a half. The bugs did a good job of taking care of most of the internal flesh and just recently we decided to finish up the rest of his mount. IMG_20190527_162350651.jpg
Soaking the head to loosen up any residual flesh

Stuffed and wrapped the head with shop towels and added peroxide.
This is as far as we have got in this project so far. I will check it over the next few days to see how the progress is going.

Looks good! It's a lot of work but once it's done, it is sweet!

Cool! Beautiful walnut.
I have to finish cleaning up my bull that has been curing for 2 yrs in NM, ala natural...still has some hide around the bases.

Very nice! That dark stained walnut will be a great backdrop for the euro. Nice nod to your son and his whitetail.

Funny thing is, that is the natural color of Black Walnut. I just put on a clear coat of gun stock oil and finish. It took 2 coats.

Thank you all, we just pulled the skull out and rinsed it off. Waiting to see what it looks like in the am. Might have to put it in for another 24 hours.

Looks good. You might bury your next one for a few months, will speed up the process tremendously.

Pulled it out last night and it is not quite done yet. I am going to put it back in for a few more days, but the color is evening out nicely.

I found 7-10 days is the sweet spot for me... after 10 the improvement is negligible.
