Comment regarding the bunk beds. I put bunk beds in my cabin and nobody over the age of about 40 will use the top bunks. They prefer to sleep on the couch or a cot rather than crawling up into a top bunk.
No problem for kids, but not so great for older adults.

I built in bunk beds as two bedrooms, will try to find a picture to post but build steps up to the top bunk (which have storage drawers built in) and then insulated between top and bottom bunk. It is crazy useful and doesn't feel like bunk beds, everyone gets their own space BUT still gets 2 queens in the sq ft.

Okay this is what I think is the final version. This quote came back at $10,680, the 12’6” walls with the 3’ of upper sheeting was $11,580. So I like the looks better for the 10’ walls and a 13’5” 5th wheel would technically fit still, I just don’t see myself ever taking mine up there but wanted to have it useable for that kind of thing in the future if I ever moved the containers somewhere else.

I’m not going to put a roof over the containers and want it to be free standing so if I sell and take the containers there will be a RV cover to utilize the septic tank and water and electric and nice gravel pad I’m putting in.

Here is a thought...Give yourself room to add a separate roof on the containers if you decided you wanted more slope to run rain off, and a thermal break to take the heat load off the ceiling. GPT has some interesting ideas on the amount it will reduce AC load.

That seems wider than 7'? The width of the container does put a crimp on things. Don't think I could incorporate that.

Here is a thought...Give yourself room to add a separate roof on the containers if you decided you wanted more slope to run rain off, and a thermal break to take the heat load off the ceiling. GPT has some interesting ideas on the amount it will reduce AC load.

I'm putting the elastometric? roof coating on the storage one for sure. May end up adding it to the cabin one down the road it it works well on the storage one. I'm thinking of having a very slight angle on the containers sloping toward the outside (maybe 1/2" over the 8' width) to help encourage the rain to run off to the outside instead of toward the inside.

I couldn't see your proposed bed layout, doing twins? could do similar approach but understand the 7' limitation, I would think you could leave a 1' walkway and still fit twins with steps to avoid ladder (which seems to be most people's concern)

I'm doing queen bunks on the end sideways - you access from the front. Then on the side I'm doing a twin loft with a futon under it. No fancy separate bedroom for my guests!

I could build some kind of shelf/step deal that you could access the top queen bunk and the twin loft bunk from between them.

I can think of pros and cons for having a 6" gap between the top of the containers and the bottom of the roof. It really wouldn't be quite that much because the drip edge would come over maybe 3" and at the 5/12 pitch that would get it down to maybe a 5" gap. If I asked for an extended drip edge it would close the gap even further.

To me the one on the right looks more like a cohesive design and the one on the left looks like a big RV cover with containers sitting beside it. Maybe that's just me.

Working on getting a quote for the one on the right to see if it will really be much cheaper.

The one on the left provides an opportunity to put a roof over the containers. I didnt plan on putting a roof on mine but water sitting on the low spots was giving me worry. A benefit of a roof over the container is the additional dry storage it provides.

Bad news from the weekend is that the 40x60 gravel pad that I had put in isn't 40x60 - more like 35x75 and it isn't gravel and it isn't packed in. And not even close to leveled out. There is some gravel in there but it is pretty loose and not sure how well we will be able to get it packed in. Probably the best option is going to be putting in some cement corner posts that are level to set the containers on and just using the gravel/dirt as a driveway type material.




I texted the guy that put it in for me asking what was up and it's been crickets.

I met the guy who is going to put up the awning out there and he was not impressed with the pad at all. Said he would have to use longer beams because the pad was built up about a foot and not packed in at all.

So going to get someone else to look at it and see if they can salvage it. They are supposed to look at it today or tomorrow and let me know what they think.

The awning/rv cover guy did talk me into that I needed to lose those trees at the end of the pad and although I hate to give up any trees I think with the awning we will have plenty of shade and that old cattle loading deal and the scraggly trees really did need to go.



Got it all knocked down at least - didn't have time to stack it all up nice. Will need at least another semi truck of material to fill that area in now.



Another bit of additional costs discovered is I took my nephew up there for a boots on the ground recon on the electrical and the service for the well is just a 50 amp service and the transformer is just a 5 kva transformer so I'm going to have to get a new service brought in. Might could get away with a 100 amp service but going to go ahead and go with 200 amp to give myself a little bit of future proofing it I put in a couple RV outlets or something like that down the road.

You won't regret pouring footings for that container
