So I am sure lots of folks deal with people who are poor at their job. Or simply insane. Today my daughter called me fairly upset. Her story is someone who fits both categories. And probally should find a new job or at least get some training.
My daughter is a special education teacher who specializes in Austic students who are low functioning and unable to communicate. She has a student who is having a seizure and bites his tongue. Blood everywhere as he continues to seize. The ambulance arrives fairly quickly. The EMT starts talking to the student. My daughter informs him of the students condition. The student starts coming to and flailing. So the EMT pins his arms by the wrist. And tells the student if you hit me I will hit you back twice as hard. Another EMT then puts restraints on the students hands and feet. Attaches him to a backboard and places a strap around his throat amd pulls it semi tight. "Because it works better then the forehead if someone is struggling". My daughter had seen enough. She asked him to remove the strap. Reiterated the students autistic and cant communicate. He had a seizure. He is coming to and freaking out because he cant understand what happened. Doesent understand what's going on. He will calm down. But he will not if you keep pinning him down and restraining him by force. They gave my daughter a hard time but eventually removed the neck restraint. Because she wasnt letting it go. I was an EMT For years. I never heard of a neck restraint. The forehead works just fine if you have to do that. Just crazy that you would take that training to be an emt and not understand what you are dealing with and have compassion. And need a 25yr old to correct you. Rant over

Cripes. There is a special place in heaven for special ed teachers. As a parent of a child who died of severe epilepsy, please tell your daughter I very much appreciate the way she advocated for her student. I hope she presses the issue to the EMT's superiors. He needs to be educated or removed from the position. He could hurt a child very badly with this kind of thing, not to mention traumatize more kids. Your daughter is a hero.

Impressed that your daughter actively advocated for her student, agree she should push it to the next level with her school administration and the first responder management. Hopefully the rest of the class didn't have to watch all these shenanigans.

Special Ed teachers are the Special Forces of Education. The amount of cases that they have to deal with is exponentially higher today than a generation ago. Best wishes to your daughter , @Nuts As a single site school board member the budget implications of SpecEd occupy every discussion.

Dude, pretty sure a neck restraint is not a thing, and violates any medical training I'm familiar with as it pertains to airways, regardless how agitated a patient is.

Maybe an EMT or paramedic reading this could correct me if I’m wrong.

I know damn well telling a patient you’ll hit them twice as hard as they hit You is not a thing.

God bless your daughter. agree with the above comments that this incident should be followed up with superiors.

Sitting here talking to my daughter about it right now. She reported it to her boss who said "they don't need reported they need educated" let it go. Guess her boss doesn't know her to well. She is typically super easy going. Extremely patient and understanding. But letting mistreatment of others especially her students go not exactly possible for her. And she is a mandatory reporter. So it will get reported. Regardless of her boss telling her to let it go.
