Colorado Tag Surrender Question

If I draw a Colorado second choice tag and decide to surrender it within the grace period, can I still get a preference point (and my money refunded)? I know if it’s a first choice, you get your money back, but don’t accrue a point for that year. It’s not clear to me though on second choice. I think the answer is yes, but looking to the collective wisdom and experience here 😂

You gain a preference point if you are unsuccessful in your first choice but draw a second choice tag. You only lose preference points if you draw a first-choice tag. If you return a tag, you get your money refunded.

Is that first part correct? That you get your money back and all your points except for the point for that year?

The way it reads says you either get your money back or your points back, not both.

  • Once a refund or preference point request form, and license, has been mailed or submitted to a CPW location, there is no way to recover that license. Individuals must still choose between a refund or restoration of preference points; both will not be awarded.

That’s different than the surrender grace period the OP is referring to. What you are quoting is returning a tag after that period. If the OP draws a second choice tag he should get a point. If he surrenders that tag within the grace period he will get a refund.

Good to know, I missed that there was early period you can return and still get your points and money back.

He can surrender it after the grace period and get a refund as well.

Yes for sure. I thought they just had some confusion going on between the surrender process and return process. Every time I think I’ve got it I get confused again lol
