Colorado Secondary Draw 2025

Well shit! I put my son in for the unit 40 muzzleloader deer tag…he got it. I was called and offered the 61 muzzleloader deer tag after we applied him. I might have to surrender one of the tags. We also have a 61 bear tag and my buddies son has a 61 muzzleloader cow hunt. We have a busy fall!
If he keeps the 40 tag he also keeps his points for next year.

He keeps his points either way assuming he drew the 40 tag in the 2nd draw.... correct??? 🤔
My understanding is that he was offered the 61 tag that he applied for in the primary draw after he drew 40 in the secondary draw. If he accepts the 61 tag from the primary as one of the next 5 in line, he surrenders his points. He keeps his points if he keeps the 40 tag instead.

We are reading it differently 😁 I see it as dad got the 61 tag and son drew 40 🤷🏼‍♂️ only he knows

I think you read that incorrectly as it was his son that drew the 40 tag and he drew the 61 tag.

Figure it out and hunt both. Crazy to give up either. Family or friends need to get involved in this dual adventure!

I have the 61 tag and my son now has the 40 tag. I also have the 61 bear tag. My son is about to start his senior year so…we are going to make it work. Busy fall but fun. I wanted to burn my CO points before the changes. He should keep his points as 2 nd draw. I burned mine when I accepted the 61 tag. Sorry for any confusion. I plan to do a semi-live post about our adventures.

For bordering units, it is difficult to go back and forth between 40 and 61, at least from the good public access in 40. Unaweep canyon is a serious obstacle separating 40 and 61.1751934636069.png

The muzzy season is just long enough where I think both elk tags are achievable, perhaps another family member could help with your son? Both are just too decent of tags as a NR to draw and not make the best out of them

I have been in 40 numerous times and know where we will go there. The 61 bear and deer tags should be fun. I know you can’t hunt the September hunts, even with neighboring units, and drive back and forth. We are thinking 4-5 days in each unit. The cow elk tag in 61 should be doable with the deer and bear.

That's right! Forget the youth and trying to get them interested in the outdoors and hunting. Who cares if hunting dies out in the next generation, all we care about is ourselves!!
In fact we should eliminate ALL youth hunting and shove an electronic device in their hands and let their brains rot on social media.

My 14 soon to be 15 yr old boy drew a secondary Elk tag. Doing a drop camp. Was originally planning to just arrange for pack out support, but outfitter offered a Youth discount and getting a great vibe. He’s been training for XC season, I need to start doing some hiking so I can keep up. He’s shooting the 3rd leg of the IBO triple crown this weekend, currently 2nd place on the overall championship in his class…so feel like he’s as ready as I can help him get. Hopefully I can get him into some action come September.

Hopefully the for you the unit 40 muzzy tag is better than my 3rd season deer tag last fall. Unaweep canyon was beautiful but not it for deer!!!
