CO front range fitness: Mt Morrison ed.

Cool to see this one getting some traction! I gotta get down there - it’s just a bit of a drive out of my way that I have squeeze in. Been getting some other good training hikes in closer to me though - a bit odd to repeat but since you are all in the area I will share anyway.

Where are these ones? I can’t tell from the pics.

I guess it’s not apparent is it! They are around the flatirons, green, Bear and such. And one at rabbit mountain

Enjoy your training guys, great idea. If I was closer I’d be there!

I do have a hill close to me for training, it’s 450m vert and 6kms so similar and good for hunt training.

How’d it go? I have wanted to go sub 30min on that badly but haven’t quite made it happen. If I don’t soon I probably never will!
Thats a lofty goal for me, trying to break 40 still. 42 this time, but hey they still claim average ascent is 1-3 hours!

42 isn’t slow. I got 32:34 last year with a pretty light pack - we were hiking to the top that day. But my vo2 max isn’t likely to get much better with age!

What a stunning view! I totally get the appeal—there’s something so motivating about working out in beautiful, scenic places. That’s actually one of the reasons I’ve kept cheapflights customer support in my contacts for a while now. I’m always on the lookout for affordable ways to travel to inspiring destinations where I can stay active and enjoy the surroundings at the same time.

Made the trip down today. Had dreams of doing the 20lb and then 60lb back to back. Started with the 20# - did that first climb a little too fast and suffered hard the rest of the way for it! Added the sand bag at the bottom and started for a second lap but I was dragging and felt like the weighted decent was going to be sketchy given my projected fatigue, so I called it a bit after that first climb. The 1:18 with 60lbs seems legit!

Now, is there a difference between your moving time and moving + unmoving time? 😉

Haha. No breaks were taken! Didn’t jog - just power hiked and tried to recover a little on the flats. Always wild to me how hard it is to come back from an over effort! I am not sure I could do it much if any faster but I think I could do it similar with a lot less suffering if I had paced myself better!

You had me worried there for a second that maybe I had hoodwinked myself if it had subtracted any super steep slow spot out as not moving but for whatever reason total time is actually 1 sec less. I usually time in my wrist watch as well so I can more easily see where I am at. Split time to the first flat section by the power lines was 11min - that was too fast for me with what was left. With the 60lbs that took me closer to 20min I think IMG_1573.png

I’m planning on an early morning ruck tomorrow. Likely heading to golden for a different one unless there’s traction to hit up Mt Morrison early tomorrow. Looking to beat the heat and I have to get it in early before work - so likely hiking by 5:30 if anyone is interested.

Just to clarify
20lbs pack means 20lb bag of sand/weight (I assume this must be it) in your pack of choice +whatever water u bring? Or 20lbs is the total starting weight? Meaning if someone has a 5lbs frames pack are they only putting in 15lbs weight?

I don’t have strava but have heard about it.

Did chimney gulch in golden this morning. Not as much elevation as Mt Morrison but still a good one for a little longer slog. 60# sandbag in the pack. View attachment 375470
This has been my goto spot to train as well whenever I can get out after kids bedtime which is tough to do
Great elevation gain and good workout on way up. Nice run down.

I already have sandbags in 20# increments so it’s easy for me to simply put the bag on the meat hauler straps of my pack. I also pack water and usually a snack or two as well. I’ll try to weigh the pack and see what it shakes out to.
