On the backside of 40, I’m starting to think of fitness more in practical terms vs performance/race type measurable data. I’ve been brainstorming metrics/goals to track my old/guy “lifestyle fitness”:

I’ve come up with the following checklist:

Sub 24 minute 5k
Sub 50 minute 10k
Swim 1 mile without stopping
Carry a 50lb pack 6 miles sub 1:50 (terrain a huge variable)
Pull and hold a 70lb draw modern bow
Bench body weight
30 legit pushups nonstop
10 pull-ups nonstop
Stand on one foot for at least a minute

Anyone else have any personal goals like this?

No. mtmuley

Fair enough. I may very well be over-analyzing things here, but in terms of longevity there seems to be strong correlation between BMI/VO2 Max/grip strength/balance and longevity.

I’m brainstorming somewhat normal activities that would indicate fitness with these metrics in mind.

I'm 60. I would like to think I could do that stuff still. I did two trip a bull by myself about 5 miles one way out of the Breaks when I was 53. So I got the pack thing covered at least. I do pay more attention to keeping in shape these days. When I was 40 I was still bullet proof. In my mind. mtmuley

what does day 2 look look like?

Kidding of course…

I should have been more on top of what you are doing earlier in my life. Thanks for the eye opener. mtmuley

Full disclosure, I can’t accomplish a few of the things on my list- but I feel a fit person my age should be able to (I’m probably 10lbs or so away from being able to hit the 5/10k times).

Just trying to hold myself accountable and get old as late as possible.

Another eye opener was bear hunting with my 30 year old Son in Law this Spring. mtmuley

I’m in my early 50s. My first rule of working out is not to hurt myself and set myself back for a few weeks or months.

I can’t run anymore due to back surgeries. My cardio is hiking. I have three levels at my house - easy, medium and harder. Medium is a 500’ elevation gain. Harder is 850’. I do backpack trips, etc to keep in cardio shape.

Strength wise I still lift heavy but I’m at a maintain level. I don’t need to get stronger or break something lifting. I can still bench 225. Pull ups, pushups and dips as accessory exercises.

BMI wise, I’ve been dropping weight this spring. Eating keto. I’m good for a pound or two reduction each week. I wasn’t necessarily fat but I decided to try for 10% body fat.

My end goal is to remain in elk/chukar hunting shape as long as possible. I have a setter puppy so at least 12 more years. 😎

I am unfortunately a flatlander. You could hike 15 miles here and not get 15’ of elevation change.

I am in my upper 50’s but workout regularly. I ride Peloton hard averaging 45 minutes a day, six days a week. I also lift a minimum of two days a week. That amount of exercise gives me a little flexibility with my diet.

Don’t know what the future holds but I plan to keep the regimen up as long as possible.

I think that’s a solid set of goals.

Overtraining is a real thing. I have to really pay attention to what I’m doing outside of workouts too or my sleep falls apart and I get stupid little injuries.

Mobility(not to be confused with flexibility) is really easy to overlook. That should be a big focus.

sleep falls apart

Underrated, good call.

I don’t get on Bowsite much, but there is guy in his 80s over there (Paul) that is still getting after it quite well.

Certainly not going to wish time away, but I have started to consider what I can do now to help stack my odds towards that that type of aging.

I turned 74 last weekend. I do not consider 40 to be old, by any stretch. There is a lot of downhill in front of you, hopefully. I was still playing city league basketball at 40, and could still dunk. I am certain that I can't touch a rim now.

Most of my formal working out is weightlifting. For an old man, I am fairly strong. I think your bench press goal is pretty modest. I recently bench pressed 255# for a rep. My body weight is 215#.

I think at your age, there are many ways to skin a cat, regarding staying in shape. As you get past 50 or 60, you will lose muscle and strength, if you let nature run its course.

I really doubt that I would still be elk hunting, without paying dues in the weight room.

10 pull-ups in a row is way harder than most people realize. I’m struggling at 8 and consider myself in decent shape.
