Boise State gone to MW Conference

The MWC is becoming a very legitimate football conference now with Boise State, TCU, Utah and BYU. By the time all is said and done maybe a stronger group than what is left in the Big XII (if there is a Big XII). The other thing to keep an eye on is what happens in the WAC now (I'm looking at you Missoula)...

Overall I'm not a fan of realignment, it screws up basketball conferences for the sake of the big money football and it seems if we end up with the Pac-16 and the Big1T?en superconferences that BCS bowls will simply become the two best teams from four super conferences (with the ACC, Big East, and SEC amalgamating into a pair of superpowers).

It will be a crying shame if programs like Kansas are hung out to dry and forced to play in some mid-major basketball conference.

For now it's good but I'm interested to see who from the Mountain West might leave to join another confrence. If Utah, BYU or TCU leave then the confrence is no longer as appealing and it could leave room for the Idaho Vandals to keep dragging on BSU's coat tails.

The Vandals are like a skunk for BSU. They stink and once you cross paths with them the stink follows you everywhere you go.

A friend sent an e-mail with this quote of an article that I found interesting...

The only alternative to adding Montana I could see happening is this: the Mountain West adds Baylor and Iowa State in addition to Kansas and K-State and then proceeds to drop Wyoming and Air Force (or Colorado State... one of the two) which are in turn added into the WAC. While this probably isn't the dream situation for Wyoming and Air Force, I think in the end it would be beneficial to them. With Boise State vacating the WAC, there is going to be quite to the power vacuum. Wyoming and Air Force are both decent teams too. Instead of fighting it out for last place each year, they could be top dogs in the WAC and even knock on the BCS door if one could run the table on a good year (something they'd never do in the MWC). They would certain receive smaller cuts from the conference (significantly so if the MWC gains AQ status) but I think in the end it makes for more competitive sports and is just good for everyone. It's likely a pipe dream and will never happen, but it's nice to dream.

This makes sense as much as WY may not be thrilled over the idea.

Apparently UM may already have routed this direction... $$$ talks and apparently, The donors seem to be calling for this. I think this is inevitable come 2011 when the invite is formally offered.

I wanted BSU to go to the Pac 16. They have shown what they are made of by winning some big bowl games. I think being in the Pac 16 would really help with their recruitng as well. I think a lot of these schools are scared of BSU. They tried to get Nebraska to play them at Nebraska and the corn said thanks but no thanks.

Sounds like Missouri and Baylor are going to get screwed and probably get sent to Conference USA. No TV share there at all! It's all about the Benjamins!!

Local news is saying that Utah may try to pick up one of the PAC 10 spots. That would be a downer for the MWC. TCU, BSU, BYU, and Utah make it a very competitive conference and IMO should get a BCS bid.

!!

Agreed.
Still a good move for BSU in my opinion.

I think it was a smart move for BSU to not go to the PAC - ##. Sure, they beat two big teams last year, but the rest of the schedule was crap. Heck, Nevada was the second best team in their conference...and got beat by Notre Dame (who was far from the cream of the crop) 35-0. Playing top level competition every week is different than once or twice a year. The MWC is a step up in competition for BSU and I think it will allow them continue winning. I'm not quite sure that BSU could weather a few 'down' seasons, with boosters, fans, and recruits. Now, if the MWC can keep UT and maybe add one of the Kansas teams that would make for a better conference.

1 Pointer: I was looking at how the PAC-## would help the Academics and Athletics for BSU. As of now Colorado has no woman's softball so this is a must to be in the conference This will increase the odds for the local high school girls to get a scholarship in their home state. Now as for BSU I don't know if they have woman's softball, but this also would help with the in state girls to stay close to home with a scholarship.

I think we have had womens' softball team playing for two years now, if I am not mistaken.

Yes, BSU has women's softball.

You can't field D-1, Pac-10 teams with "local high school girls". If you want to be a team of locals, you have to drop way down to D-III, D-2, NAIA type of stuff.

I have coached lots of High School basketball, and the best players in this state (All-State, Player of the Year) struggle to get off the bench in WAC basketball. The elite schools are recruiting world-wide for many sports (basketball, track & Field, etc), and certainly nationwide for elite programs.

Well I guess what I was getting at was not letting the good high school athletes leave there state to go to another school and the PAC 10 would increase the ability to recruit for any sport. A lot of the kids playing football at BSU are from California! Back in the day when BSU played Marshall for the championship, my friend Randy Matyshock played tight end at BSU and scored the only two touch downs that BSU had. He was a transfer from a JC in California.
