baseball fans, did you see the blown call

I love when people get pissed off because someone continues to play the game they've spent their whole life playing. If someone is willing to pay him to play, why should he quit assuming he still wants to play? Because it ruins your memories of him or his "legacy"? If that's your reasoning, then I suppose you would support Randy giving up hunting because he can't always get around the woods like I'm assuming he used to. Sorry Randy, no more hunting and no more show. Looks like I'm going to have to take over now (that includes any tags you draw this year).

I never said anything about it ruining his legacy or my memories of him. It was frustrating because he was making the team I root for worse by being on the roster, and depressing to see such a god given talent get old and not be able to do the thing he's done so well my entire lifetime.

He probably earned that right by doing what he did for the Mariners, but still a frustrating situation for the fans. It would have been nice to at least have a big send off for him, maybe I'll feel better if he comes back later this year for some sort of ceremony.

The last active hero from my childhood retired yesterday and moved to Florida to play golf, it's a sinking feeling.

When you have that much emotionally invested into a team like that, emotions take over from rationality, like I said below.

When minorities weren't allowed to play?
When it took eight balls to draw a walk?
When the pitching mound was five inches taller?

The game changes, and will continue to do so.

None of those have to do with bringing technology to the game!! Baseball has never been played to have everything be perfect, why should it start now??

You are the only person that I've heard complain about Griffey's presence last year. I've read over and over again that Griffey prevented that clubhouse from falling apart last year. He was the glue that held the team together, even when he was injured. So I think your 15 months is a little long by about 13 or 14 months.

At least you weren't in my shoes. Throughout high school and college I watched a lot of Roger Clemens and tried to mimic the man as much as I possibly could. Talk about a let down.

Hey, even though I disagree with some things you have said about baseball it sure is nice to see someone else on here have a similar baseball passion to what I have.

That would be depressing. I can be really thankful that the players I've grown up idolizing (Griffey, Johnson, Edgar and Ichiro) have stayed out of the whole steroid cloud. Not saying they were clean, but at least none of them have been drug through the mud.

There actually was a pretty a pretty large group of mariners fans that would've rather the team went in another direction with the DH spot last year. I wasn't part of them, but it didn't take long for me to realize where they were coming from. You are right though, 2009 Griffey was acceptable. He wasn't a good player, but he was fun to watch and it was great to see him interact with Ichiro like he did.

Baseball should keep with it's umps making the calls... and give them a tool if/when such a RARE incident as this occurrs to utilize a tool to make the BEST decision for the game. In this case, the "GAME" was robbed of a record. The Player was robbed of a PERFECT GAME... Not intentionally as we all agree - though I really believe in a case such as this an Ump should have the ability to review the call. I would hope very far and very few uses of the "tool" though in a case such as this - it should be available.

Can anyone imagine a "photo" finish Nascar race - subjective to the person waving the checker flag??? Sometimes modern technology - when used as a tool holds a value beyond measure - as in this incident.

the game has never changed. you throw the ball. you catch the ball. you hit the ball. they have changed the rules, but the game remains the same. leave the technology to the gameboys and play stations.

Did anyone see the tape of the Detroit Tigers before game time today. I actually feel a little bad for the ump. Galarraga came out and talked to Joyce and Joyce was actually crying. Galarraga as of now may be my second favorite ball player(right behind Jamie Carrol) These two guys are class acts through and .through!

Big Slick,

There is no crying in baseball!!! All joking aside it was cool to see. Joyce and Galaraga are both class acts in my book.

Sytes,

Lets not bring Nascar into a baseball discussion. ;)

edited: not necessary...

Heh, sorry fowladdict - we must have posted at the same time - did not see your comment. :) I am and have been forever a bobby Labonte fan... I don't think video will help him anytime soon...

AGREE 100% Slick. Much can be gathered from both these... and maybe as this has unfolded - this may be an agruement for no replay ability.

When it takes 4 flippin' hours for the Yanks and the Bosox to play 9 innings, it means Baseball needs to change. If that involves some use of technology, great, but a 4 hour game is ridiculous.

Thank you for quoting an umpire Jose. (Especially one that needs to retire already) Not sure how you think technology would help speed up a game when there was nothing to dispute in the game you are referring to. A true baseball fan doesn't look at their watch to see how long the game has been going on.

Haha you guys are gonna tell me to get off your lawn next ;)
I was pretty worked up about it yesterday and this morning still, sorry I came off a little hot above. Please don't take the go to hell comment personally anybody...

I also really feel bad for Joyce.
So many of the umpires today are trying to get themselves into the limelight and be the center of attention, when there job is to be the exact opposite. Guys like Angel Hernandez and Joe West have really been embarrassing the league as a whole.

Then there's guys like Joyce that you can tell really love their job, and work to be the best as they possibly can at it. The guy gets a ton of respect from other players and umpires, because he's one of the most consistent and uncontroversial umpires.

And of course, this happens to him instead of one of the real deadbeats. Real shame. At least the whole thing is bringing attention to the public how much of a class act he is.

I never watched this game but have listened to the controversy quite a bit. The call was wrong, both people involved are class acts and the human element is definitely part of the game and should be. As bad as this was, the alternative would be worse. It brought a lot of questions to my mind when people start talking about the use of technology or worse the reversal of this call. What if this was a bad fourth ball called? Would the same controversy be mentioned? Would fans (by definition fanatics) be enraged and want to go to "instant replay" for the strike zone? On the other hand...would a called third strike on a 3-2 pitch warrant the taking away a perfect game by going to instant replay? If this same call occurred in the bottom of the second, would anybody even talk about it? Would instant replay be used to take away a perfect game, last out in the bottom of the ninth?

This was a bad deal...but both the official and pitcher will gain more noteriety than the other two perfect games thrown this year. The pitcher will always be known as a the guy who pitched a perfect game but was robbed in the history books.

With all the talk on sports talk radio in the Denver area you would think people would stop and say we do not want replay in baseball. Do you really think Matt Holliday was safe in the tie breaking game against the Padres? Most people beleieve he was, replay may have kept the Colorado Rockies from going to the World Series!

Everything Evolves.....

Since I don;'t watch sports or know anthing about this I should probably not input........ (And I'm sure that will be quoted ;) )

But, I agree 100% with Randy11, if you have the Technology, use it.

Are you guys that are against instant replay, also against the current instant replay?
I figured the current system would convert a lot of people over, maybe not.

You know the home run review only seems to happen a handful of times a year so it doesn't bother me much. The last thing I want to see in baseball is review on a daily basis. Baseball is one of those sports that you need that lose your cool ultra-competitieve stuff to "keep it real". I've been playing baseball all of my life and part of baseball has been the terrible heartbreaking calls and the calls that go my teams way. That is what draws me back to baseball. It is one hell of an emotional game. Baseball needs that...it needs to be imperfect. Baseball isn't just throwing and swinging. Baseball is also getting ejected for disputing that terrible call, watching managers throw bases and spitting in the umps faces. I fear further review would ruin this side of baseball...my 2 cents.

As Matt K said (I can't believe I agree with him on something) this blown call will have baseball fans remembering the good (that emotion I was talking about) that came out of Joyce and Galaraga because of that blown call. I gaurantee you this time next year I will remember that it was Galagraga that threw 9-1/3 innings of a perfect game whereas if the call was reviewed I probably wouldn't remember his name this time next year.
