I love arguing on the internet. I thought the Public Lands series was informative and helpful, apparently this guy doesn't think so.

Quick scroll down his page and I see he tries making an argument against conservation easements.

Makes my head hurt.

Pretty clear who ODed on the kool-aid....the idiot.
Every state site I've looked at says state lands are not public lands.
Yeah there are some state parks & preserves and such, but they are in dire straights from what I see these days.

I don't see Randy ODing on DQ even....

Brandon lives in my neck of the woods. He has done some good things to ensure that sportsmen have access to public lands where landowners are trying to lock us out. But obviously he's way off the mark on other issues. And he and Randy have gone around on this issue before. ;)

The one western state that no one talks about is Washington. Our state lands are effectively public lands. http://www.dnr.wa.gov/recreation

The biggest caveat to that are DNR lands leased for tree fruit, where USDA guidelines prevent public access (lots of them here around Wenatchee). Also, I believe camping is only allowed on the DNR lands managed for timber (most of our lands).

And although the state DNR has sold some lands (currently at 2.2 mil vs original 3.0 mil; as best I can tell), fish and wildlife has purchased more than 1 mil for public access.

It's too bad more of the states don't manage for recreation along side economic considerations.

You can't fix stupid. I can't believe someone that supposedly supports public land access like he proclaims on his facebook can't see the writing on the wall, and see what states would do with the land if they had control.

He has done good things for access and PLAA gets money from me. Don't understand why everyone hates a road? Gonna be 25 and super fit forever?

I hate roads because peace and quiet hates roads. Elk aren't real fond of them either. Old people and handicapped people don't have a right to access everywhere they accessed when the were 25 and super fit. Part of getting old is not being able to do what you used to do (little blue pills notwithstanding). It's also part of being handicapped, hence the word.

Besides, 99% of the lower 48 is roaded. I think we can live without any more. I could pull the stats but I'm not going to.

There is enough units out there with roads already. If you get to the point where you need roads then try the Medicine Bow. You probably couldn't fit another road in there.

Your right .I just lump WA with OR & CA now in my mind. I know there are some CA lands but you cannot hunt most, like state parks.

That's funny, I know a guy who shed hunts in the NW. He has a chit pile of elk sheds in his garage and his big butt don't wonder to far from the truck which requires a road. Maybe the NW elk didn't get your memo.

It's not my memo. Read your Elk Of North America (1982), Thomas & Towiell, Wildlife Management Institute, pages 453-456.

Maybe the elk don't have a choice where your big butted friend hangs out. Nevertheless, the science I am aware of backs my hand.

Finally, what's the road traffic like during the time of year when the elk are shedding those antlers (is it like it is during hunting season, or are those roads closed with snow or no one is around because it February), and are the elk even in that area during hunting season or are they higher up?

Mother Nature is trying to bless America, there's just too many roads getting in the way.

Last I checked, there isn't a Save America's Roads Foundation. They aren't going anywhere, so having places without them doesn't seem like a bad idea.
