My dad brought his 1903 Springfield back from WW2. He called it "Buddy". He took it out of the attic and sporterized it in early 1960's. When he finished it he said something to it and put it back in the attic and never looked at it again. My mom told me to take it 10 yrs after dad passed, so I now have "Buddy" in my safe
