I got a weatherby mark v 257 mag and I want to mount my leupold vx6 3-18×44 to it. This being my first scope mount I'm not sure to go with a picatinny rail or regular mounts and weaver style rings? Any suggestions on which way to go? Thanks

Burris XTB 25 MOA Steel rails are excellent along with steel Burris Zee Rings. I usually stay away from the aluminum rings unless they are 7075 even then steel is just better.

I think this is a personal preference thing. I am a Talley guy and prefer rings vs pic rail.

Another vote for Talleys.

I know people like the flexibility of a rail but I don’t like the look or pushing my scope any higher.

Pic rails supposedly eliminate the need to lap rings. I like the look of the Leupold Mark 4 rings, but the steel ones plus your scope will add noticeable weight.

So I was going to start a thread, but instead I'll ask here.

Tube size? 1 inch or 30mm, what's the more popular?

Base type? Pic rail or something like a 1 piece standard base with windage screws and dovetail. A lot of folks seem to be weight conscious about their rifles and standard bases and rings usually add weight. Pic rail and rings are generally available in good aluminum and weigh less.

30 mm and a bedded, pinned rail. Get good rings with good cross bolts that will let you torque those cross bolts to 55 inch pounds I use the Nightforce ultra lights.
The bedded rail will keep both scope bases aligned and you can remove the scope and ring assembly for cleaning your rifle or whatever you may wanna do and put it back on with no shift. Put a little bit of imperial sizing wax on the ring dovetail clamps so there’s no possibility of it binding up anywhere when you tighten

The standard rail can be removed without removing the rings.

Approximately 30 years ago I had a rifle built and had all of the metal including custom floorplate, scope base, rings and screws finished in high polish blue. Never fired the thing. Cartridge is .280 Remington. When I mounted the base, I used slotted screws to make possible removal easier. Awhile back I sold the scope and rings that were on it. I then attempted to remove the base. I was able to get 2 of the screws out, but the front one was quite stubborn and apparently had rusted. Since the front hole doesn't go all of the way though I suspect some bluing salts were left behind. A gunsmith friend was able to remove it, but there was some cosmetic/discoloration damage largely of my doing.

If I sell it I would do that as is with no base. I doubt that I will ever shoot it. If I keep it in the family I should put a base and rings on it. I could just re-install the original base using Torx screws since I acquired a set of Leupold 30mm rings in glossor I could get a pic rail and rings. Steel rails and rings are hard to find in gloss finish and likely not worth the cost to have blued. The gun which is left hand is IMO worth $3K some I'm more likely to want to sell it.
