What Ammo is This?

Found this ammo cleaning out my wife's grandfather's storage unit. He didn't have any firearms, or any other ammunition, so not sure why this was in the lot.

Just curious what it is. I'm admittedly ignorant with gun knowledge and my Google skills couldn't turn anything up. I thought .410 at first, but it doesn't fit. Figure someone here may know pretty quick.

does it say anything on the bottom?
at first glance it appears to be a brass shotshell but without a size comparison to something or a look underneath its a tough guess. Lots of old school shotshells for revolvers and such were made like that but then again lots of shotshells for shotguns came in reloadable brass. Does look like its ten shot though which means it may be something for a bigger caliber revolver.

Have no idea on size scale from your picture.. Looks like a blank to me. I used to have a retriever dummy launcher that ran on .22 blanks that looked something like that.

Thank you. I had that picture but forgot to upload. I just added it.

It's a 22. blank.
May possibly be from an old nail "gun".
Gun kinda looked somewhat like a large chisel.
Nail went in with a finned sabot to stabilize it in the barrel. Blank went in behind it in a "chamber".

Lay 2X6 on concrete, put the "barrel" against the 2X6 and hit the back with a hammer.

We are talking late 1970s to mid 1980s technology.

Still current technology, actually. We call them Hilti guns due to a common brand name, but they’re commonly called powder actuated nailers. The current powder charges (.22 cal rimfire blanks, basically) look a little bit different though

The nails are like what you describe

Pretty sure my Hilti is .27 caliber. mtmuley

I popped one open this evening. This is what I found. Also put measuring tape on it

I appreciate all the helpful ideas, though I haven't been able to offer thr best clues until now.

.22 LR shotshell w/ #10 shot

Many, many years ago, I shot those at a Boy Scout Camp. They also had smooth bore .22 rifles for them.
