Time to retire the Buck 110

For hunting outdoor edge replaceable blade. Replaceable blade and has some back bone for popping joints. For trapping something cheap. I use the grinder to sharpen knives for trapping so I’m hard on them

Funny. mtmuley

I guess it’s funny. The more things I can walk into the wood that actually mean something to me, the better. A $20 replaceable blade knife assembled by some Chinese kid is not for me. They’re also a crutch for a lot of people that don’t want to learn the skills needed to properly sharpen a knife. I used to be one of them…

What is actually wrong with the knife that would need to replace it?
Just keep sharpening it like Straight Arrow has done. You'll probably wear out before the knife does.
Nothing besides it doesn't seem to hold an edge like it used to. Maybe it's the sharpener?

I get all of that. And can do it. Have a handful of fixed blades handed down. My replaceable has it's place. I don’t want a suppressor. But they aren't dumb. mtmuley

I understand the comparison but there’s two big differences for me. There’s no direct replacement for a suppressor and a suppressor isn’t bypassing a skill. But I get what you’re trying to say.

Buck will put you a new blade in it for about $10 and send it back all polished up. My brother has one of the new ones in a drop point, much stronger tip and improved steel. I have a Benchmade steep country I’m pretty fond of and an argali if you want one of the ultra lights. I still prefer a regular fixed blade to the replaceable blades.

I'd rather have a Buck from the 1980's with 1980' steel in it that about any other knife on the market.

The steel in my Benchmade auto doesn't even come close to holding an edge as well as any Buck I've ever owned.

I had to switch back to havalon. I almost emailed them and told them
How unsatisfied I was with the sharpness of their blades. Last year I actually pre sharpened all the blades before going into the field.

I have used a havalon for the last 10 years and use them in every animal in that time. But I also have a benchmade folder that I daily carry, and there’s just some things I like a sturdy blade for.

I grew up with Buck 110, but then met and had business with CJ Buck in person, haven’t touched and won’t touch a Buck knife since the.

Why's that?

Probably just a personal issue with him since it is top secret. Fwiw, I have no connection to Buck.

I use the Newberg Gerber for much of my butchering but also carry a fixed blade for heavier work. I have my father’s buck knife but don’t carry it in the field because I lose stuff.

I have a 1990 model buck folding knife on my pack as my emergency knife. I use havalon for my field butchering.

I’ve spent many a dark night trying to sharpen my knife in the field on the second half of an elk. A Havalon saves me 20 minutes or more trying to sharpen a dull knife into a slightly sharp knife to finish butchering.
