The official 2025 Wyoming elk hunt for Dave N thread.

Have you beem to a doctor? What you're describing sounds a lot worse than a cold or flu.

I'm 5 weeks post kidney transplant, and I'm out working in the yard, moving, for up to 2 hours at a time, and I was walking over a mile at a pretty good pace before coming home and I'm not having any symptoms like you describe.

I would see a primary care doctor and figure out what's going on.

Probably not a bad idea just to be sure.

I just looked. A pulse of 180 for a 40 year old, is max for vigorous exercise. What you describe i would say is barely moderate.

180 is scary, especially combine with the other symptoms you described.

Ok I'll tone it down. More bike riding and elliptical and less weight sled. It DID help get my knee stronger. Heart rate was with my hand on my chest counting for 15 seconds. Not scientific but close. My resting rate is around 60, done with a blood pressure cuff. Whatever I had just screwed up my lungs and I guess I need to work back up to my normal self. See someone now? Yeah, right. I hate going when I KNOW there's a problem. Old school farm boy. Fugg them doctors, rub some dirt on it! ;)

I finally got over an 8 week lingering cough that my girlfriend insisted I had walking pneumonia. I just wasn't convinced. I'm over it now. It didn't bother my breathing at all and I was still able to exercise.

Wear your pack with 30lbs in it while doing step-ups. That and biking up hills really helps work those muscles us flatlanders don't get to use as much!

Get an oxygen meter from walgreens or amazon. probably $12. one that measures pulse too is probably $18. That will give you more data. and I second the idea to go to a doctor. You want to be as ready as you can be.

I missed the 180 rate heart beat. I agree with others to start with a doctor before you have a heart attack.

Did a test just now with the blood pressure cuff strapped on. I did 4 rounds with the sled.

1. 160
2. 143 hmm.
3. 161 must have counted wrong yesterday.
4. 173 OK, that's high. No more of that. Still lower than the 180 I quoted yesterday but higher than my max. Yesterday I just counted beats for 15 seconds and multiplied by 4. Guess it's easy to mess up.

Might be because I haven't worked up to it like I did last year. Dunno. I liked it because it worked my legs and knees which needed help after my injury, plus it worked a little on my arm strength.

All of you guys saying see a doctor, thanks but no thanks. I have a bad taste for them and already know just what he'll say. "Oh, you had a bad cough for a while and get winded pretty easily? It will improve over time. That will be $150, please." Pass. I'm stubborn.

The nearest hill is probably 5 miles away! Nothing but flat farm ground around me. I'll spend more time on the elliptical and riding the bike. I was doing 10 miles in around 55 minutes last year and did it right at 60 this last time. Been throwing in some pushups and a little planking if I think of it. Guess I have been starting out too hard. Impatient. I'll do what I can and give it my best shot when I get out there. It will most likely be my last "big" hunt of any kind so I'm not overly concerned with being a gym rat to get maximum results for one trip. Multiple trips year after year is a different story. I'm getting to be like Hank. Prefer to just hang out around the house and disliking people! ;)

Like I said, buy an O2 monitor. They are cheap. The heart rate makes sense if your 02 level is low. That said, there is not much you can do other than supplement the oxygen. You might be able to ease back into it, and the monitor will tell you where you are in that progress. You had the problem for so long your lungs have not been able to take a deep breath.

I pay $150 for a plumber or electrician to take a look at something they are knowledgeable about when I have a problem. Professional advice is worth the money, as long as you follow it. Getting it earlier is better, but that horse left the barn a long time ago in this case.
Good luck.

I’m as frugal as anyone but your heart rate numbers are very high. It’s worth $150 to know if everything is ok. Lung issues are likely related to your cold and physical condition.

Maximum heart rate 50-59 is 160-170. 60-69 is 150–160.

Those numbers have you on the verge of a heart attack.

Its like this.

Go to the doctor.

Or someone is going to find you passed out, or worse.

Stubborn is cool.

Until you're dead.

Try this to calculate your max HR.

The HRmax Calculator is based on this formula: 211 - (0.64*age)

So let's say you're 65 years old, your max heart rate should be about 170.

The old 220-age formula is wrong, and gets even more wrong the older you get.

I don't think 180 is out of the realm of possibilities. Listen to your body and don't kill yourself. Get a smart watch to monitor your heart rate.

if i'm still in the waning days. sometimes weeks, of a cold or other sickness my heart rate will spike to 150 just climbing the stairs at work, and I work out a lot, with a lot of cardio. give it time and take it easy getting back into it.

Honestly, the “out of breath during what should be standard exercise” thing? That’s exactly what people describe right before getting a heart stent, ESPECIALLY with max-for-age heart rate.

Some folks make it to the doctor on their own, some are stubborn and get an expensive ride. $150 and some gas is one hell of a lot cheaper than an ambulance. I can’t make you go, but I highly recommend it. It’s no fun, but a heart attack is even less fun.

I know u laughed at me the first time. But I'm not joking.

The first thing u should be doing when u get up is having 10oz of water with a 1/4 squeezed lemon and a few grinds of pink sea salt.

Then due 15-20min of quality yoga.

Will help reset the body.

Know it dosnt sound manly but mobility/balance will be vital.

I started doing 15 minutes of yoga every morning about a month ago, holy crap I feel better than just regular workouts.

Dave, you were plenty fit enough when you hunted with me although that was many years ago and we were both younger.
Listen to your body, sounds like you are over exerting, don't do that at your age, I'm 65 next month, I run once a week, I don't push it, 156 max for me.

3 years ago I had 2 undiagnosed angina attacks, I ignored the first, 3 days later had another, had a stent fitted, surgeon said artery was 85% blocked....nearly had my own tag punched!

(sods law, as I'm typing this nearly midnight, phone goes, daughter-in-law in a panic, our son having another full on night time epileptic fit, not his first but it is frightening for her, wife calming her down now and he is coming out of it)

Back on subject, I too would go and see the doctor, it might cost you a few bucks but it will answer a few questions.
