The official 2025 Wyoming elk hunt for Dave N thread.

Got the charge for my conservation stamp. Need to get a new ink cartridge for my printer and run off a couple copies.

Got back on my elliptical and just did a 15 minute fairly fast-paced test. Man, being sick really put the whammy on me. Stopped because of the pain in my chest where I feel the tight spot from the coughing I had. I'll try again later and see if I can work back into it. Might break out the bike and pedal a few miles.

@Dave N , I think you might have better luck easing into getting into shape. You have until October. I think you could start with some long rucks with a light pack, 20 lbs and just add distance to that as it feels good. Bump the weight up little by little in August and do them higher heart rate stuff closer to the hunt. 3-4 weeks.

don’t beat yourself up and miss your hunt!!!

Just found out this cough thing takes 6-8 weeks to get rid of, even with medication. Not anything contagious, just a cough that hangs on. It's not bad most of the time but now and then it hits me. The worst part is I get winded fast. Hard to do much of a workout. At least my knee is feeling good! I just have to go slow now trying to get my stamina back. Maybe I can find a nice stupid bull that walks up to my truck! ;)

We had it too. It's more mentally taxing than physically after a while. Good luck.

Snow finally melted enough for me to get up to my place which will serve as our camp this fall. Seems to have weathered the winter OK despite a few known things I need to work on this summer - including getting the solar working again in the main cabin. Anyone know “a guy” in the Kemmerer WY area who does solar work? Definitely need to replace the batteries, but also looking into an upgrade so I can charge my truck up there. Could also use some help figuring out why my propane generator won’t start and a few other things. So a good handyman might be the real need.

Hell, I'm not above begging! ;) I've received plenty of help through this group of people for the situation we/I was in. @Wildabeest has generously offered up his place to use as base camp for my hunt. Now that he's got an idea of the repairs needed it would be awesome if someone could see their way to lend a hand helping him out. (He hasn't said anything lately about his ankle surgery) Not everybody can actually be in camp for my hunt to help out but maybe there are one or two of you that have some spare time this summer to drop in and see if they can assist in his electrical issues for the solar system and/or getting his generator up and running. I'm no rocket scientist but know a little about a lot and would gladly make a pre-hunt visit but I have a family function and a fishing trip to go on during the time he would be there. So if anyone here would be able to help out, or has a friend or relative that owe you a favor, post up and see if you can get something worked out to give Greg an assist on his camp. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Drove up to Wisconsin yesterday to bring back my dad's golf cart. 6 hours of driving must have been the trick. Damned if I didn't get a solid 9 hours of sleep! First time in a long time. Think I'll get the bike out and try for a full hour today. Coughing is better. Want to put some miles on the Harley but that doesn't help much with a workout!

Success! Mostly. I managed to make the full 10 miles. Right at 60 minutes. Walking like a drunk now and climbing the stairs into the house hurt like hell. Ice cold Bodyarmor tasted pretty good! Now for a quick bite of lunch while my hip joints recover and then I have to get cleaned up and go to my daughter's house for the race. I could use a nap...

I’m no expert but I’ve done quite a few repairs on a propane generator my uncle had. If you want to PM me with what’s going on, I’ll see if I can give you any ideas where to start.

Thanks. Bottom line is it cranks but won’t start. I’ve not done much else to try to narrow down the specific issue.

OK all you health and exercise folks, I need some advice. I'm fairly well past most of the coughing that pulled me down the past month but I'm now having trouble with getting winded easily and being worn out without really doing a lot. Maybe it's just getting my lungs trashed from whatever I had? I know I'm a little overweight, but currently if I bend over to pull some weeds from the landscaping I only do that for a couple minutes and I start puffing like I'm out of breath. Today I went to my dad's place to run the push mower on his terrace for about 20 minutes. I had a bite of lunch and drug my sled for half an hour in periods of 2.5 minutes pulling, 2.5 resting and repeating the pattern. Legs were fine, a little burn in my thighs, but gasping for air for about 2 minutes each time until it caught up and I started pulling again. Heartrate when I stopped was roughly 180 and dropped to about 125 after the 2.5 minutes rest. Made dinner and now I just feel gassed and ready for bed.

Do I keep doing what I'm doing and it will improve? Do I do more eliptical with less effort on my body? I try to ride my bike as many times as I can for 10 miles depending on if the wind is on blast or not. I'm down to 4 months until Wyoming and getting a little worried about my endurance. I recover pretty quick but don't like getting winded so easily. Just proving the old saying "It sucks to get old".

Try some vitamin B complex, it will help with your energy. You might not feel as gassed. It won’t help with your breathing.

I think you’re starting way too hard, your heart rate shouldn’t come anywhere close to 180 right now.

You should be rucking at a low heart rate. 100-120 right now for 3-6 hours a week. Strength training 2 days per week full body. Definitely should not be sore for more than a day after any given session or you’ve pushed too hard.

I’m not a trainer but I have done a lot of research because I’m too cheap to hire a personal trainer.
