Talking about banning shooting on public land!

As stupid as this sounds, some idiots are shooting tracer style bullets in these tinder dry conditions.

I never even knew such stuff existed for recreational shooters. It does. And, according to some friends who are familiar with it, guys shooting the stuff have started a disproportionate share of fires.

Can't fix stupid, so I guess they try to legislate/regulate it.

You name it right now everything is starting fires. The fire by Laurel was started by someone using a grinder outside.

Are there any facts or proof to fires being started in the past from shooting? I know it can happen but seems funny that so many this year are gun related.

IME, you'd be surprised at what little evidence is used to make the claim a fire was started by target shooting. Not saying they don't happen; as I'm sure tracers, steel jacketed/cored and tannerite targets will probably start a fire. I am saying that I have seen fire starts attributed to target shooting with what I thought was very weak evidence.

I have seen target shooting bans and other closures during high fire times. Just hope they go away once the fire season is over.

The article makes it sound like all of us are out in the desert shooting "steel" bullets into cheat covered rocks.
Is there a chance that all coppers like Barnes tsx, or hornady gmx, can increase the risk? I don't think the physics suggest it but I'm trying to understand how everyone is using "STEEL" bullets now. I wanted to get my wife out shooting at 200 to 400 yards alot this summer in preparation for her first lope tag and I was thinking of loading some tsx bullets in her . 270 but now I'm not sure I can get her out shooting enough to do this properly.

Also there was a recent article with photos about nimrods shooting up trash and trees at a trailhead for "firearms fun".

It's well established ... you can't fix stupid ... let alone keep up with the stupidification of those abusing freedoms and trying to ruin it for those of us who cherish the freedoms.

They think shooting bullets can cause fires and so they want to ban shooting? Well it is proven that shooting bullets can cause death so should we ban shooting? You are already responsible for every round that leaves your gun. I get tired of people making laws for everything. Ridiculous.

They are even trying to ban camp fires and cigarettes, can you believe the nerve of these people.

Define 'responsible'. Guy in AZ fires an incendiary shell out of a 12ga and burns up 18,000 acres. He might get a spell in jail and up to $15k in fines. Punishment not really fitting the crime in my mind--he's getting let off way too easy.

believe me, I'm not for legislating morality or even brains, but if people won't truly be held accountable for their dumb actions, the gubment might have to save them from themselves.

The punishment might get lighter after they ban shooting on public land.

My bullet hits a sign. I am responsible for vandalism.
My bullet hits hits a big horn sheep and I don't have a tag. I am responsible for poaching.
My bullet hits a nun. I am responsible for murder.
My bullet hits a huge bull elk for which I have a tag. I am responsible for tagging a huge bull.
My bullet hits a rock and starts a fire. I am responsible for starting a fire.

There are already hundreds of laws on the books that would apply to all these scenarios in all there variations.

People have a right to be smart and people have a right to be stupid. If we try and use government to put us in rubber rooms so as to eliminate all risk of making a bad choice then we loose choice. We loose our ability to act and choose for ourselves. No thanks.

Sorry. My theory is that it is not the boolit, but the shmuck that pulled the trigger. Just something we learned from pops waaaay early. But keep in mind that I am just an Eye Duh Ho redneck.
