You and I are in similar boats, but I was married with young kids. At that time I was self employed, but had to join the carpenters union to work outages at some local plants and for some signatory companies until I got a permanent job at a company that reimbursed me for my education for the number of years that I would sign on to remain with them. I finished my bachelors degree, leveraged my self-employment history and some other post-secondary educational/training opportunities and got my PMP certification. Became a project manager and enjoy it. I had to work through things the long and hard way, but it has been worth itI was 28 when the 2008 recession hit. I went back to school and finished my degree. Granted, I was single so much easier to make it work financially, but it definitely has been worth the time/money invested.
