I am headed to southern north dakota. The people I spoke with said that in october the rattlers can still be out. What boots or gaiters do people have good success with? Thanks

I have worn gaiters. Comfortable boots can be hard to find and I tend to cover a lot of ground depending on the hunt. I have a pair of Whitewater brand and they fit fine. They trap heat though so pants will get sweaty.

I have encountered dozens of rattlesnakes from timber to sidewinders and none have done more than either stand their ground or slink off once they see me which is usually before I initially see them.

I wear the gaiters with shorts on early hunts but if is a later hunt were I have on long pants then I skip the gaiters. I once read 1/2 of rattlesnake strikes fall short and even if are bit then is a dry bite half the time. When is not dry bite, might not reach flesh due to hitting a boot, etc.

I respect snakes though I worry more about twisting my ankle than snakebites.

I realize it only takes one, but there is not an over abundance of rattlesnakes there in my experiance
