It has been a tradition in my house since I was a little boy to always shut off the television during lent (Ash Wednesday to Easter). So it has been just over a day of no television in the Nemont household and the kids are all reading books and playing board games.

Anybody else ever shut down the tube for an extended period of time? After a couple of days you don't even miss it.

Not purposely but we have periods of the year, due to sports+work+misc., that it doens't come on for days at a time. We have a "no background noise" rule at the house during homework and dineer on a daily basis so through a few kids practice schedules in there and the boob tube gets neglected.

do you find yourself spending more time on the computer? :D

Not much to miss on TV these days. Blue channel vs. Red channel 'news' or reality crapola.

...get a life JB. :D

I haven't had TV for almost 2 years. We watch a few movies, Sienfield season discs etc.

I don't even miss it anymore except for maybe the news once and a while.

Wow... I though I was the only unsophisticated Cave Dweller out here!! Get this... I DON'T EVEN HAVE CABLE!!! Only rabbit ears. It's not that I'm too cheap, it's just that I can't swallow any of the souless tripe that spews out of Hollywood and can find ways to entertain myself for hours on end instead of having the grey matter sucked out of my skull by senseless drivel.
Still, I tape and watch Sienfield, CSI Las Vegas, Davinchi's Inquest and jam live on my bass with any live PBS music show I can find. Seems like every day is Lent around my crib.

I don`t shut it off, but I`m not real religious either....I watch local stuff mostly... especially traffic if i`m heading out on the I-10.....I don`t have cable either, never have.... hell I just got this puter 3 years ago.....rather be traveling somewhere.

I don't have cable either, and it IS because I'm too cheap!
I usually watch an hour or two each night. I have a few favorites;

Boston legal (can you say "Denny Crane")
The Unit (modern A-team)
Lost (kind of like survivor)
Survivor (kind of like Lost)
Desperate Housewives (Eva, need I say more)
Brothers & Sisters (can you believe the best republican on TV is played by Rob Lowe?)

Of course, if there is a good internet debate going on, I’m on the net.

Oh it is absolutley because we are to cheap to get cable or dish.

$50x12=$600. That is a tag somewhere, a whole bunch of sewing crap for her or the start to a pretty good vacation. She demanded fast internet, we settled for no TV. Maybe the woman is just chatting with starnge dudes all the time:rolleyes:

Rabbit ears don't even pick up anything here either. Most people look at you like you are insane when they find out you don't have TV:eek:

I have rabbit ears in the garage and love it get the Sportsman channel all hunting and fishing all day. We turn the TV off for dinner and homework.

From May 1st,2005 until mid August 2005 we had no tv,no phone,no running water,no electricity. It didnt bother us a bit.

We have been without cable or satellite hook up for a year now. Only a couple analog staions via antenna and 1 digital one. We figure we don't know or care what we are missing.:D

My youngest son and his wife don't have tv. Its not that there that cheap, they just don't find it enjoyable. There is a ton of other shit they would rather do. When the peckerhead lived here, you couldn't pry him off the couch and away from the tv.
My wife and I don't watch too much, she watches more than I do. We are fighting my brothers (the partners in our cabin) about gettin dish network, they want it we don't. Let the kids be outside and learn to fish, and enjoy nature.

As for Lent, she made me give up ice cream for the duration, and redmeat on Friday

No cable for us either. Too much crap out there today. I would rather spend the $ on something I enjoy (like anything from Cabela's or Sportsman's). Anyway, we get the few local stations the rabbit ears will pick up. That's more than enough for me.
