Reduction in number of NR deer licenses

No skin in the game, but my question has been, are these reductions an intent to reduce mule deer harvest overall, or provide more opportunities to residents.

If the goal is to reduce mule deer harvest, seems quite difficult to do with general resident licenses and a 5 week rifle season.
It’s for neither. The goal is 2500 less people on the landscape

Not me but I know the guy the nonresidents “hurt”.

I wonder if that’s the same guy that passed me several years ago (who was driving 70mph past me on a gravel road) in R7 and launched a rock into my new windshield.

Doubt it. But ya never know.

Some cattle haulers can take “If you’re not first, you’re last” to a whole new level. Glad he’s ok!

Just another hazard out there. mtmuley

A big problem I see is that we know how many R's and NR' apply for and get tags, but our FWP has no idea how many animals are harvested. Some randomly located check stations open two days a week from 8-5ish are where they get the harvest numbers. Oh, and the phone survey that people lie on. That sub-sample of the overall harvest means nothing.

Always blows my mind, the difference in western vs Midwestern states harvest data collection.

Not all western states are like Montana. What all do they collect in the Midwest?

Wisconsin collects:

Day of kill
Buck or doe
Time of day of kill
Weapon used
How many hours you hunted that day
How many deer you saw that day
Weather/conditions that day (on a scale)
Public or private
Region of state (northern forest, central forest, farmland)
County

All registration can be done online and must be done within a set amount of time (I think 24 hours, I always do it that day).

Kill on the day would be sufficient. mtmuley

SOME western states are choosing to NOT know at this point. Its quite bazar.
I commend Utah for starting the mandatory reporting.

Georgia Collects:

Day of kill
Weapon used
Sex of animal
Size of animal.
Region of state (northern forest, central forest, farmland)
County

Its all done on your phone app. VERY easy.

-type of weapon used
-sex
-if antlerless they ask to specify adult or
yearling
-County where harvested
-number of points over 1"
-circumference at the base of the antler
- length from the corner of the nose to the
nostril
-usually also report if you've seen x animals while out hunting (such as animals they are monitoring. Here its Bobcats and turkeys)

That's all done either online or over the phone whatever your preference. Takes less than a minute to complete.

It will never be the case that all animals go through a check station. Sure, people can lie on phone surveys, and they also could hide their kills. We might as well just forget about it. :D
