Recommendations for a northern Minnesota trip

My mother is 90, she’s very spry and a great sport. She went on a two week raft trip down the Grand Canyon two years ago. She has always wanted to go to the boundary waters. However she had her shoulder replaced in September and I don’t think I want to plan a trip with mandatory camping every day.
Looking at the map it seems like we might be able to rent a cabin and take a couple of day-trip paddles - maybe even guided - to get a feel for it without committing to a multi-day trip. We might fish, but sightseeing would be the idea. This would be either 3rd week of June or 3rd week of August. Anyone have suggestions about dates, cabin/lodges, or locations? Thank you

There are lodges on the edge of the bwca that offer exactly what you are looking for. Some of the lakes in the bwca are motorized and allow 25hp motors. Latourell’s on moose lake would be one that offers you the option of canoe day trips or use of a motor. Fall lake, farm lake and snowbank are all on the boundary of the bwca on the Ely side that could offer a similar experience. June is usually booked pretty early. August might offer you more options.

Voyageurs national park is another option with many options for lodging.

Thank you! Latourells is the first one I found that actually gave me the idea.

Staying at one of the resorts along the gunflint trail is a favorite of my family. Beautiful scenery, ability to do day trips, but with more amenities. And spending time in Grand Marais is fun as well. We are trying Hungry Jack Lodge this summer.

Or for something way different.. we did a houseboat on Kabetogama and Namakan years ago. Unbelievable trip.

@HuntLedger, I stayed at Hungry Jack Lodge in the fall of '24 for a week of grouse hunting. I'll only say publicly that I do not recommend it. Regardless, enjoy the north woods, its fantastic up there!

Go in August. Typically beautiful weather, way less bugs, and the possibility of blueberries if it’s a good year for them. It’s when we try to plan our annual trip to Canada every year.

Dang, we had high hopes having never stayed there. We are brining our camper, staying in one of the campsites and only there for a few nights.

I worked there 20 years ago. Bob is very knowledgeable about the BWCA and the entire area. He will be able to help you out. Even if you decide to go somewhere else he will answer questions you have and guide you in the right direction.

We are doing a houseboat on Namakan for a week in July this summer.
