Okay, had some stuff change for my next summer vacation plans so leaning toward doing a quick trip to San Diego to do a Blue Fin Tuna hunt. This would be a family trip with the wife and son and his soon to be wife.
Trying to decide if a 1.5 day charter is going to give us a good chance to both catch a Bluefin or not or if we need to extend it to a 2 or 2.5 day trip.
Cons to extending it would be that would leave the girls with an extra day in San Diego and not sure what they would do. For sure the 1st day we are out fishing they would be doing a spa day.
Wanted to keep this to 4 days - go out on a Sunday and fly back on a Thursday so that is what is causing the tight timeline. (my son will be short on days off).
Looking at booking the Nautilus out of H&M landing.
Their prices are listed differently depending on the website, but essentially $6,300 or $6,500 for a 1.5 day - leave out at 9pm on Monday and get back at 7 am on Wednesday. That would fit the schedule best and probably get us a decent chance at catching at least one bluefin. Limit is 2 per person per day.
Going to a 2 day jumps it up to $8,500 but you get 2 full nights of hunting and 2 limits. Still leaving out at the same 9 pm on Monday but not getting back until 7 pm on Wednesday. Not sure we need that much fish, but from a bang for the buck perspective and to increase the odds of catching any at all it seems like it would be the way to go. EXPENSIVE... but getting our odds of actually catching a bluefin much higher. If we did this I would probably have them get back a little earlier so we could drop the fish at the processor to get them frozen for the flight home on Thursday afternoon.
The time slot I'm looking at lines up perfectly with the new moon so that should be good. Right now with El Nino the water is warm and they are having to go further out, but supposedly that is going to drop off some by this time next year.
Also, I'm thinking of telling a friend that he and his adult son can tag along on the trip for free if they pay for their own way out there and their own lodging while they are there. His son lives in Malibu so they might not even need lodging and it would only be my friend that would have to pay to get out there. My friend was a school teacher most of his adult life and is from Minnesota and a big fisherman so I think this would be a big deal for him. It wouldn't cost me anything extra other than we would have to split the fish up more ways. I would call dibs on the first bluefin since I'm footing the bill for it, but after that I think we would rotate however you normally do it. Any thoughts on that? I think having an extra couple hands on the deck might be as much of a pro as a con. If we really ran into some fish we could load up, if we didn't that would suck but it wouldn't be because we had more people in the boat.
